At a Georgia home for troubled orphans, brooding teen loner Les (Sal Mineo) sticks up for meek kids, endures taunts from bullies and is unfairly singled out as a troublemaker by the orphanage supervisors. Les then meets Rudy (James Whitmore), a convict in a local chain gang who's sympathetic to the young outsider. Les begins visiting Rudy whenever possible, but the prisoner then breaks free and forces the boy to aid in his escape, which taints their friendship and puts Les in jeopardy.
