Inspired by a real-life experience of director Josh Margolin's own grandmother, THELMA puts a clever spin on movies like MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. With infectious humor, Margolin employs the familiar tropes of the action genre in hilarious, age-appropriate ways to tackle aging with agency. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business -- despite what her daughter Gail (Parker Posey), son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe.

A stellar showcase for the talented June Squibb, Thelma avoids cheap laughs as it finds the lighter side of some serious issues.

Predictable and radical all at once, Thelma is laugh-out-loud funny and heartfelt proof that getting old doesn’t mean we have to lose our spunk.

What unfolds is Mission: Impossible on Mobility Scooters, with a soundtrack to match. Thelma and Ben after the crooks; Danny and his parents chasing Thelma and Ben. It is full of humour, and not a little sadness. Go to Full Review

The key to all this is Squibb’s success in convincing you of the close contact Thelma maintains with her younger self. You can see the girl in her. Go to Full Review

This is one of those films that comes out of nowhere in the movie season and delights everyone who checks it out, which is why I’m begging you to see this in a theater. Go to Full Review

Thelma reminds us that you can still walk away from an explosion when you’re 95, even if the reason you didn’t turn around is because you didn’t hear it. Go to Full Review

The greatest compliment to Thelma is that it pays off on the premise in spades, but far from just being a riff on a genre piece, it transcends it to give us so much more with humor and grace. Go to Full Review

See more Genevieve L 08/09/2024 Jane Squibb and Richard Rountree proved that age and experience matter! They both did an excellent job of conveying both humor and poignancy, representing the lives of older seniors and their experiences. The writing struck a great balance between humor and pulling at the heartstrings. It was consistently engaging throughout the entire film. See more Read all reviews
