Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Tóth, co-adapting with Klára Muhi a novel by Zsuzsa F. Várkonyi, handles this intermittent tension... with an appreciative subtlety, and without a hint of soapiness. May 4, 2023 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Hajduk and Szoke are strong performers. Apr 27, 2023 Full Review Todd McCarthy Hollywood Reporter A finely tuned post-Holocaust tale. Sep 17, 2019 Full Review Simi Horwitz The Forward An achingly complex love story that embodies a father daughter relationship and a deep bonding friendship between two lost souls whose suppressed and silent interactions resonate powerfully. Aug 2, 2023 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said A post WWII drama sheds light on its human cost, and fortitude and love. Rated: 3/4 Jun 16, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Where so many Holocaust films look at the tragedy of it all, Those Who Remained chooses to look at the humanity in the post-war years when survivors are learning to find joy and hope again. carol j Very touching, intelligent, film. I'm so glad that I saw it, and I'm so grateful that the Carlton theatre in Toronto continues to show foreign films of such high quality. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Michael J Just back from seeing this extraordinary movie at the Wilmette Theater: ‘Those Who Remained'. Set in 1948 Budapest. Everyone still stunned by the war and its aftermath. A kind doctor befriends a 14 year old girl. They are those who were left at war's end. So powerful, honest, human, and poignant. Makes you think…how did those who lived…live? Sad beyond belief in parts, but wonderful in most others. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Heartbreaking and life affirming at the same time. Feels so real, and according to a close friend who lived in Hungary at the time, it IS real. One of the most moving films I've ever seen. Hope it makes it to the major streaming services. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Edward S Found blessedly short but very wanting. It sort of left me without any resolution Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/20 Full Review Audience Member "Those Who Remained" is a film about Hungarian people who survived the Holocaust physically but not quite mentally and they are now caught up in a Communist regime. It focuses on a 42-year-old gynecologist doctor, who lost his wife and two children, and a 16-year-old orphan who has not faced up to the fate of her parents and is brought to the clinic by an aunt because the girl has not gone through puberty yet. To tell any more would be giving spoilers so all I can do is give my reaction to the movie. I thought I knew where the relationship between the doctor Aldo and the teenager Klara was heading and though I wasn't far off I found myself not reacting which was very puzzling to me as it takes very little to get me involved emotionally with characters in films. Karoly Hajduk, as Aldo and Abigel Szoke as Klara, do an excellent job, especially the latter who shows her changes physically and mentally with her face and body plus a nod to the hairdresser! I am on the fence about recommending "Those Who Remained" simply because the director and screenwriters did not 'get' to me though at 83 minutes it does tackle a theme not often touched upon. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member An absolute masterpiece! Superb acting, and the movie avoids all traps of becoming either a typical holocaust horror movie or a reinterpretation of the Lolita story... A word of warning: if you have no idea (like many of my fellow movie goers who seemed to have suffered from amnesia regarding historical events and professed not to have understood the movie at all) regarding WW II and post WW II events in Europe, do yourself a favor and consult Wikipedia before watching this movie!
