After World War II ends, Sgt. Hugh O'Reilly (Aldo Ray) and Col. William Shepherd (Dick York) are stationed in occupied Japan. Initially, O'Reilly harbors a bias toward the Japanese people. However, as he gets to know the nation's civilians, he begins to shed his prejudices. Though Shepherd continues to treat the Japanese coldly, O'Reilly bends military regulations to help feed the local children and starts a romance with Yuko (Phil Carey), a beautiful translator.
