On opening night of his new Broadway musical, Show Boat, composer Jerome Kern (Robert Walker) reflects on his long career. With the help of his mentor, composer James Hessler (Van Heflin), a young Jerry travels to Europe and soon has one of his tunes placed in a successful production. Back home, Jerry's unceasing efforts result in the production of his first show. Jerry's career blossoms and he works with the best artists of the day while guiding James' wayward but talented daughter, Sally.

Too many violins in the sound track. so typical of MGM. dumb story, a a great disservice to the composer whose songs are absolutely top drawer. Luckily we get to see them performed by and array of MGM players. Not all of them successful in their attempts. If you want to see interesting colors and costumes here's some good music go right ahead just go out to use the restroom during Robert Walker's moments. What a shame what a waste of his talent.

Unfortunately 'Till the Clouds Roll By' is lacklustre in the story department relying too heavily on its lavish musical numbers to get by. This hodgepodge of directors provides a very mixed and uneven film where the use of multiple directs is evident. One star with Judy Garland as this films only saving grace. 'Look for the Silver Lining' is a classically beautiful number
