An interesting Jazz documentary portrait piece of one of music's 'almost' men.

Audience Member With all due respect to the filmmaker's love of Jackie Paris, this was a slog and would have been more effective as a short or better yet article in Downbeat magazine rather than a full length documentary. There was little of the spontaneous feeling of jazz here. It failed to make Jackie Paris relevant to modern listeners. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A great doc about a lost brilliant artist. If you're a fan of Searching for Sugar Man, do yourself a favor and seek this one out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a pretty interesting doc about an old Jazz musician that never made it big named Jackie Paris. The premise of the movie was trying to discover why he never made it big despite what was largely considered having enough talent to do so. I think the movie never really answers that question, but spends a lot of time tracking down details of his life trying to piece it all together. In the end, you never really know why he didn't make it big, but you get a good profile of who he was, and that made for a pretty interesting movie in its own right. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Mike M Can't, ultimately, unravel the enigma that was Jackie Paris, and for a work in which music plays such an important part, its original soundtrack is monotonous in the extreme. What it can do is offer an equally intriguing variety of theories, some more plausible than others, several of them tragic. At the press screening, the film broke down around the halfway mark, plunging the room into darkness. Cue a voice from the back rows: "He's jinxed". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/21/08 Full Review Audience Member a well put together documentary using archive footage, memoirs from people from his past. I felt that the film, and Jackie, could both have said something about why his career crashed - why did he think it happened - the film gave a few clues but I wanted something a bit more *earth shattering* Still - a good film and I was lucky to see it as part of the London Jazz Festival 2008.
