An English dock worker (Michael Andrews) who cannot hear or speak meets a fellow laborer who shares his disability, an immigrant (Eduardo Paolozzi) whose only aim in life is to be left alone. In spite of their personality differences, the two men become friends and find in each other acceptance, companionship and strength in the face of prejudice in London's working-class East End. Tensions rise when they become targets of ridicule at the hands of a group of uneducated neighborhood children.
