Tongues Untied definitely has a few years on it stylistically, with its monologues staring directly into the camera evoking '90s Public Service Announcements, no matter how poetic the dialogue. But there is also a defiant and powerful story of struggle put proudly on display, as Riggs demonstrates the pain associated not only with the individual pains of being black and homosexual, but the unique hatred that he is forced to endure as a member of both groups. Forced to prioritize different components of his identity that are both equally valid and unchanging, all while at the height of the AIDS epidemic that was tearing through the ranks of the small group that fought the same fight, the director showcases a powerful message on preconception, social pressures, and identity. This is not a typical movie in any way. Sometimes it may seem cheesy or dramatic. Overall, however, it is shocking and brilliant. There are many light or humorous moments and many intense moments. Throughout the movie, you never stick with one scene for too long, nor one theme - there are constant changes and twists in content, perspective, artistic medium. The content is so utterly real that for most, you can feel it extremely deeply, and if you have felt the same way, it really speaks to you, as this content is not found in this way with such intensity anywhere in popular media. I watched this in a movie theater at my college last night. Everyone was left completely speechless - entirely silent throughout the movie, through the credits, until it was fully over. It is currently my favorite film. (My writing is absolutely terrible here, I apologize - but wanted to contribute that it is an amazing film.)
