David Ehrlich indieWire A potent but emotionally diffuse coming-of-age drama in which everything -- even faith, even love -- has the potential to be as exploitative as the deforestation that continues to eat away at the soul of the Amazon. Rated: B- Oct 8, 2024 Full Review David Robb Slant Magazine Plunging headlong into the murk of exploitative missionary work and environmentally destructive capitalism, Transamazonia is a film with undeniable import and sociopolitical urgency, which its muddled narrative can’t completely dampen. Rated: 2/4 Aug 17, 2024 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com There’s enough mystique in “Transamazonia” to make it spellbinding and haunting. Aug 16, 2024 Full Review Frank J. Avella The Contending Marais’ film is captivating and, often, majestic but a definite slow-burn that might test the patience of some filmgoers. The film truly comes alive in the final reel when Rebecca aligns herself with the tribe. Rated: B Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Olga Artemyeva ScreenAnarchy The rainforest comes alive with many closeups of insects and constant splashes of light trying to penetrate the darkness, and the land becomes its own character, the most important one. Oct 17, 2024 Full Review Tom O'Brien Next Best Picture And what “Transamazonia” did so admirably in its first act — following one young woman’s journey in finding her own path in the mystical Amazon jungle — is diminished in the film’s final mosh pit of plot.
