Brian Lowry CNN.com This filmed version of the off-Broadway show works as a triumph for the young cast and especially the relatable lead, powering past its lesser aspects with infectious energy and a touching message. Jun 24, 2022 Full Review Amy Nicholson New York Times The book and lyrics writer Dan Collins is better at his insight into the young characters’ melodramatic point of view — none of them can imagine this rather rote story has ever happened to anyone else. Rated: C Jun 24, 2022 Full Review Peter Canavese Celluloid Dreams A tribute to an important moment in 20th Century gay cultural history and a starter musical for kids featuring endearing characters, corny humor and a talented young cast. A show that fills a void and serves a purpose. Rated: 3/4 Jul 9, 2022 Full Review Jennifer Green Common Sense Media An endearing teen cast and lively Diana Ross-inspired score deliver important messages highlighting a well-known LGBTQ+ support organization. Rated: 3/5 Jun 29, 2022 Full Review Radhika Menon Decider While the central conceit of Trevor: The Musical is a worthy one, it’s a bit of a slog to sit through... It’s a big undertaking to mix new tunes with Ross’s legendary songs and the results are mostly unmemorable numbers. Teddy B This feels more underlyingly creepy than aspirational. It doesn't go nearly as far as most anyone would assume it would with the subject matter it concerns itself with and just feels so cringe-worthy as a whole. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review BACON B Its good movie to do something else to do with it, I am saying its not really the best musical. Some of the songs are really good and thats almost the only thing is saving it. The plot is meh, its still good but not so slay. The actors did a great job of acting out the parts though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/23 Full Review marcela s Excellent show. Touching, honest and realistic. The lead actor is stunning, with his gazes alone you can feel what he is going through. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review paul d What on Earth have I just watched. Considering this has been filmed for Disney+ I was expecting maybe something on the same level as "the newsies" … this isn't. This is more like a "decent" musical filmed at a high school with kinda decent media students. The acting ability isn't too bad…but then they start singing. Imagine the really bad singing parts of high school music - well this is 100 times worse. It's very strange casting and whoever told these kids they could sing should be fired. This might been better if they stuck to the singing. The storyline is decent - a boy in the 80's growing up interested in guys, loves showbiz, and glamour… but not everyone is accepting or understanding. I just wish they didn't have the singing OR if they did they had talented singers. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I wanted to like this more than I did. I had a chance to see this in NY, but didnt take it. When I heard they were doing a pro shot, I was stoked. I finally got around to watching it and... kind of am glad I missed it. I cant think of much good to say about Trevor. Trevor is at its best when it comes to the dance. The actors charleston, jazz, ballet, etc their butts off. The shame is how weak the singing is. Yeah, the actors are all young. For a pro shot of an off broadway show U expected better. They were pitchy, off tempo, and often off key. The songs were stereotypical in their musical theatre feel. The acting was what youd expect with a bunch of kids. If you like high school shows you will love it. If you want normal broadway stuff, this is not it. Its telegraphed, flat, and awkward. The actors stumble over their clunky dialogue. No character has a chance to breathe with the breakneck pace. Its a shame, really. A show that could have been so right was just so wrong. I would almost rather see a high school production of Rent or Avenue Q. Where its easy to laugh at how bad it is. This was just so bad it kind of hurts. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Andrea N An important and entertaining musical carried by an impressive young cast! If I had one critique, there's a few too many songs.
