Gaylord R This is a masterful Indian adaptation of a Thomas Hardy classic which excels in all areas of good film-making: acting, story, camera. The slow descent of the leading couple from love-birds to abuser and abused is heart-wrenching. An honest, powerful, dramatic cinematic event! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/23 Full Review r 9 Strange film. It's let down by poor dialogue and weird overall structure. Freida Pinto and the locations/visuals are the only bright parts of 'Trishna'. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow and beautiful and meditative, Trishna is an adaptation of Hardy's "Tess of D'Urbervilles". It's as lush as Bollywood and as muted as the original story, though with major deviations. For those who may not know the original Tess, it stands on its own as a study of a passive young girl and the seductive young man whose life crosses with hers. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member having read Hardy's 'tess' book & seen polanski's 'tess' this bears no resemblence to either but on its own i liked it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good watch and insight in to some of Indian life Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member The film is probably notable more for helping break down some cinematic barriers in its depictions that many films from the sub-continent have never thought about using in its 100 year history. The disappointment is in the actually love story we see, which is more emotion than substance and feels too sedate and unexplained. Lisa Kennedy Denver Post Trishna engages the potent collisions of the rural and the urban, the poor and the rich, and considers how these interactions unfold in a romance and how they might also destroy it. Rated: 3/4 Aug 3, 2012 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News Winterbottom has complete control of the film's look and feel, but the story seems to run away from him. Rated: C+ Jul 26, 2012 Full Review Ann Hornaday Washington Post A rare unsatisfying swerve from an otherwise reliably provocative career. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 20, 2012 Full Review Kip Mooney College Movie Review The film abruptly shifts gears from love story to tragedy to unwatchable torture porn. Rated: C+ Sep 18, 2021 Full Review Josh Long Battleship Pretension With Trishna, Winterbottom digs deep into his characters' humanity, and comes back with gold. Mar 10, 2021 Full Review Kelly Jane Torrance Washington Examiner Tess was very much a novel of its time. Those times have changed -- though, as Winterbottom does manage to show here, not as much as we think. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 27, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
