Tim Cogshell Alt Film Guide A crunchy, witty, and often just plain funny mash-up of classic noir tropes ... in addition to dialogue worthy of Dashiell Hammett and, occasionally, Mel Brooks... Rated: 3.0/4 Oct 21, 2017 Full Review Dan Barnes Battle Royale With Cheese It's a fun homage to the days of old, and a respectable piece of independent cinema, even if it isn't necessarily without its flaws. Jan 22, 2020 Full Review Sean Axmaker Noir City It's too long at just under two hours and the performances bounce between intent caricature and knowing lampoon, but the commitment to the project is as authentic as its affection for the genre. Apr 22, 2019 Full Review Bradley Gibson Film Threat Tom Konkle's Trouble is My Business is a revisit to the thrilling days of yesteryear black and white crime drama in the tradition of The Maltese Falcon and a generation of films like it. Rated: 7/10 Sep 11, 2018 Full Review Kevin A. Ranson MovieCrypt.com ... Trouble is to film noir what Once Upon a Time in the West was to the western: the final word. Valo G It's a campy film that doesn't take itself seriously. Every noire trope from anmesia, fem fatales, to an out-of-luck gum shoe is used. Overall, it feels like a student, or low budget film. There are scenes shot in front of a green screen where the masking is very bad, and you may have flash backs to shows from the 60's and 70's. So if you like losing yourself in a film's realism, this is not the movie for you. In fact, it's possible, that to enjoy this film you have to completely turn off your critical thinking and analytic mind. However, it is possible to enjoy if you grade it on a curve. If you enjoy noir, you'll love this film. I already have it on both DVD and Blu-Ray. This is one of those "best films you've never heard of," so do yourself a favor and go check it out! It's probably available on your favorite streaming services right now! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Love this throw back to noir films. It really captures the essence of the old-school detective setting. The characters are truly engaging, and you are completely invested in figuring out the mystery behind the case our protagonist is involved in. And the deadpan humor is amazingly well done. I truly love everything about it from the pacing to the art direction. Tom Konkle did a great job bringing this world to life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member What's so impressive about Tom Konkle's homage to 1940's film noir is that he not only writes, directs, and stars with the confidence of a modern-day auteur, but he also manages to pull off an incredibly difficult genre and aesthetic using modern day visual effects on a micro-budget. The best FX and digital environments, however, can never substitute for a good story. Trouble Is My Business has all the story beats fans of noir crime dramas would hope for but it's really the passion and talent that Konkle possesses in conveying that story that really shines. And appealing to fans of the genre with style and humor is only one measure of that type of storytelling prowess. The mark of a great director — and what's on display here from Jesse Arnold's and P.J. Gaynard's cinematography to Thomas Chase's and Hayden Clement's score — is Konkle's ability to assemble and lead an excellent team of like-minded artists with true vision and panache.
