      Critics Consensus

Newton has star quality, but this exercise in style can't hold a candle to the original.

StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 44 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Starring Mark Wahlberg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a bit slow in parts, and the videography is unsettling to the point of almost being crazy weird. There is a sincere lack of chemistry between the leads. However, Newton gave a great performance. And I did get surprised a few times. I wanted to keep watching to find out what was really going on. Not a great movie, but fun camp. Just don't compare it to the original - take it on its own merits. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie that spends for more time on the artistic presentation of the movie than the mystery/thriller aspect of the movie. There are many twists and turns, but they are not creatively presented to the audience nor interesting to the story. The director is more focused on how the scene is shot they conveying any plot information to the audience. Walberg as some kind of seducer simply does not play. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review steve d ineffective remake that's miscast leads fail to do anything with. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I was bored for most of the movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The Truth About Charlie is a good film with cool twists and turns, Mark Whalberg and Tim Robbins acted really well, the other co-stars did a good job too Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Anthony Lane New Yorker The film is hilariously indifferent to the conundrum of the plot, but it is sustained, just about, by the buoyancy of its mood. Dec 19, 2022 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media A bad remake of a good movie. Rated: 2/5 Dec 29, 2010 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Demme's movie is so benign--he likes all his characters, even the villains--it feels like a game of "let's pretend." It's a movie for movie lovers--playful, hip and light as a feather. Nov 1, 2007 Full Review Michael Guarnieri The Spool [T]he movie is a joyless, dull affair, resulting in something completely unnecessary.
