Audience Member Its not one of my favorite foreign films, but it was good, I like the 3 way love between all of the characters, I liked the flashbacks when they were young and then to where they were older, The film is sometimes slow and wordy at times but interest never flags. The good thing is that it kept me interested until the end. So for this being an ok film that qualify my expectations for the first 45 minutes of the movie, but gave up at the last part of the movie, but still was a decent movie, I give " Un Amor " a D. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Paula Hernández treats us with a dynamic but overall a bit too safe drama about a reunion between three people who used to mean a lot to each other while growing up. Bruno is an athletic boy working in a car repair shop, Lalo is his scrawny, geeky friend. The different boys are like brothers, sharing their small lives in a minuscule Argentinian town during the seventies. Then, one summer, Lisa moves to the town. Extravagant, flirtatious and outspoken, Lisa charms both of the guys and opens their eyes to the outside world. Lisa's parents are leftist academics fleeing persecution in an ever saturating political climate. Lisa firmly believes that the world is full of possibilities, that everyone has the right to make what they want of their lives. Norms aren't absolute. Hernández uses the period elements of the 70's well, bathing her flashback scenes in warm summer light, coloring it further with period music. The love triangle between the three young characters grows and offers some great character scenes, transcending the inherent weaknesses of such an old setting. These scenes are about growing up in a broader, ideological and cultural sense. The 70's scenes are intercut with a present day storyline where the three friends meet again. They have lived their whole adult lives apart and become very different from one another, but their reconnection sparks old memories and behavior patterns. At first Lisa contacts Lalo. Bruno joins in later. A return to youth makes all of them reassess their choices and the ways their lives have turned out. Nostalgia stems poignancy and self-discovery much like the one experienced in adolescence. "Un amor" is well paced, acted and directed. The trio of characters gets to your skin, the themes of the piece are everyday but profound. Still, the movie feels a bit too familiar and safe, somehow afraid to emerge as anything a bit more unique. I would have loved to have seen more about the worldviews and philosophies of the characters and less about their emotional involvements with each other. Everything here is pleasant to follow, but at the end you feel like you didn't quite get as much as you might have hoped for. This isn't a romantic relationship flick, but it doesn't really land firmly enough in the area of psychological insight or broad themes either.
