      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Underwater's strong cast and stylish direction aren't enough to distract from the strong sense of déjà vu provoked by this claustrophobic thriller's derivative story.

Jen The ending wasn't the best, but it had me on the edge of my seat. The movie was reminiscent of the first Alien's movie. Overall, a pretty good movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/20 Full Review KL A little too much T.J. Miller and the sacrifice card was played too many times, but no real complaints. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/20 Full Review Heather N perfect date movie! Aliens meets Leviathan!! worth the price of the ticket, for sure.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/20 Full Review nicholas weist Action from the very beginning great movie!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/20 Full Review sammy Horrible movie. Didn’t like it Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/20 Full Review wolfpack Movie has a real in the moment feel which I liked because you don’t see that too much in films especially in a sci-fi film. Quick to the action, I think if this movie was released on a streaming platform it would have done better because it would have lowered the expectation of being a blockbuster or needing deeper plot. Rated: 1/5 Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) The Abyss meets Aliens with a bit of The Poseidon Adventure, a lot of Pacific Rim and a dash of The Meg in this subaquatic sci-fi that offers nothing more than the sum of its references. Rated: 2/5 Feb 10, 2020 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) The murky cinematography further hinders a picture that looks as though it was shot through raw sewage. Rated: 2/5 Feb 9, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews William Eubank delivers a remarkably well-filmed sci-fi horror-thriller filled with great tension, surprisingly visible (!) action, fantastic production design, and some really captivating VFX work. Rated: B Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Paul Lê Tales from the Paulside And, amid all the oceanic dread is a fundamental shred of optimism that lances the dark ending—for the sake of others, we have to be less thoughtless. Rated: 3/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast It might not reinvent the wheel but unlike the drilling that initiates the accident, it is neither deep nor boring. Underwater is a B movie as slick as oil and is a gem hidden in the busy waters of February’s cinematic releases like a rare pearl. Rated: 4/5 Nov 11, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
