Penelope Gilliatt New Yorker The often too knowing Chabrol has made one of his most mature films, in allowing himself a child’s eye. Mar 4, 2024 Full Review Tom Milne Sight & Sound The radiance of these early sequences is immeasurably enhanced by the fact that the family in question is a real one. Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times This time, working with people he has known for a long time and telling their most intimate secrets, [Chabrol] sometimes seems to be simply watching along with the rest of us. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Jacoba Atlas Los Angeles Free Press Well acted, startlingly insightful, beautifully constructed, Une Partie de Plaisir is a controlled exercise in hysteria. Oct 31, 2019 Full Review Jesús Fernández Santos El Pais (Spain) The story is not interesting enough, above all, because of the overwrought script and the unfortunate dialogue that is loaded with an apparent banal depth. Leeroy K Really disturbing, most likely because one can recognize reality in the movie and reflect upon life and society... The ending is a bit too much, although when you read the main actor's biography and his death...maybe not so much. All in all, a great movie worth watching! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating and creepy Chabrol drama about a claustrophobically possessive man (played fastidiously well by the film's screenwriter Paul Gegauff) who demands an open relationship with his lover but cannot deal with the consequences. The tension is there throughout, leavened occasionally by bitter humour. A welcome return to form for Chabrol after a couple of real duds. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member just ok not really my bag Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Odd Chabrol film is like watching a train wreck. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Attacked by many Critics as sexist Chabrols film focuses on the cancer of in fidelity at the heart of a relationship. Chabrol cast his regular writer Paul Gegauff as Phillipe a man who has had various affairs but turns into something rahter sinister when his common law wife starts to beat him at his own game. Chabrol hit upon the rahter ingenious idea of casting Gegauffs ex wife as the women scorned. What follows is a deliciously nasty tale of back stabbing and violence which spirals into the shocking final scene . The film has a mean streak at its core ,but then as Chabrol is keen to point out life has a mean streak also. It does drag in places and it a long way from vinatge Chabrol ,but its still an interesting movie with plenty to say about the human condition Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this film and would watch it again and again Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
