Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com As accomplished and committed as most of the cast is, one doesn't so much find affinity with the characters they play as feel bad that they were compelled to enact such ugly movements. Rated: 2/5 May 29, 2015 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International One can almost understand why this reprehensible film was banned in India, being utterly worthless, morally suspect, and an aesthetic outrage to boot. May 29, 2015 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh Playback:stl Where the film falls down a bit is in basic storytelling, as it is easy to get lost in the cuts between India and New York, and even more so in the many jumps back and forward in time. Audience Member there cant be a more powerful movie about the choices you make between ideals and survival Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review kevin a Un-Freedom could also be titled Un-intelligible. This mish mash of social consciousness tries to address Islamic terrorism and coming out as a lesbian in India in the same film by toggling back and forth in and out of each story arc. You might be wondering why? Director Kumar outsmarted himself in trying to tell two parrellel stories, one set in New Delhi where a proud, politically connected father watches as his only daughter struggles with her sexuality and refuses to go through with her iimpending arranged marriage. Her father is humiliated and will stop at nothing to stop her, but he should know it's not possible to stop or alter hard wired sexual identity. Meanwhile in NYC a Islamic terrorist arrives from Pakistan to expose a moderate Muslim college professor. Instead the story devolves into torture and graphic, gratuitious bloody violence (including crucifying an innocent student of the professor (who was taken in a carjacking) by hammering phillips screw drivers into his wrists-yuk. Equally gratuitious is wanton female full frontal nudity in exploring the "independent spirit" of the daughters modern artist bisexual, promiscious lover and wife to be. This film is a messy, mottled brew of self-important cinema indulgence by this director. It was just released two days ago, so that might explain why I watched the film with just two others on a Sunday afternoon. Way too much overcooked curry for me.
