David Ehrlich indieWire There’s good fun to be had in watching so many limbs get hacked off for the better part of two hours, but Director Kim can only dismember so many body parts before he starts to lose track of his movie’s spine. Rated: B- Oct 4, 2024 Full Review Johnny Loftus Decider Uprising elevates its historical epic game with grand scale battles, courtly deceit, and a satisfyingly roaring soundtrack. But it’s with the forbidden but never-say-die friendship at its center where it remains its most compelling. Nov 11, 2024 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Not entirely historically accurate either, Uprising clearly treats its story with a modern action sensibility, right up to almost playing modern music during some of the climactic action scenes. Oct 25, 2024 Full Review Kate Sánchez But Why Tho? A Geek Community The choice of culture, history, and sins in one person’s life and personal connections makes Uprising (2024) more than just another movie in the robust sageuk genre. It stands out for all the right reasons. Rated: 8/10 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Daniel Hart Ready Steady Cut Uprising does not hold back and I am so glad it didn’t. It’s a watch-worthy experience from start to finish. If you love Joseon Dynasty dramas, this is a treat. Rated: 4/5 Oct 13, 2024 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania Park Chan-Wook-produced historical drama features well-staged sword fighting but uneven storytelling. Atlis S Straight forward, the plot isn't overly complex, but the movie is stylish and has good action scenes. The samurai armor particularly for the general was well done imo. Fast paced overall, at times a little too much so, but overall worthy of a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Bruce W Was looking for something to watch and thought I would give this a go. Firstly I checked out its score on Rotten Tomatoes and the 83% gave me confidence that I would not be wasting my Saturday night. Sadly this proved to be a mistake. I just couldn’t get on with it. Found it confusing, boring, overlong and poorly acted. At one point I thought about giving up and calling it quits. I persevered to the end and will just mark this one down to experience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Dane B. M Definitely worth watching if you like lopped-off limbs and some dynamite fight scenes. The brotherly love/hate is wonderfully done by the two leads. The music was dynamic. The extras gave their all adding up to a treat to watch (nothing worse than laughing extras in the middle of a blood and guts fight). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Matthew D The people bravely rise up against their oppressors in this compelling Korean epic. Director Kim Sang-man’s Korean historical action drama epic Uprising (2024) is quite entertaining with a great humanist message of kindness. The slaves are treated so terribly that it is only natural to seek freedom and self-preservation, instead of cowering in front of their slave masters. Uprising also depicts Japan invading Korea in bloody warfare and startling swordplay. The beach sword duel enshrouded in fog looks spellbinding. I kept thinking Uprising is similar to Spartacus and Gladiator. Uprising is certainly one of the best Korean films you’ll see on Netflix, so give it a watch. The swift swordplay and strong acting are worth a viewing at the very least. Writers Park Chan-wook, Shin Chul, Kim Sang-man, and Lee Ja-hye describe slaves with more honor, friendship, compassion, strength, intelligence, and bravery than their rich oppressors. Uprising is a humanist tale that does not want the masses to give up, but rather overthrow those who would keep you complacent. I loved the enjoyable and complex characters as well as the depiction of ancient Korea. There’s a ton of hilarious jokes to keep things lighthearted, even if it is dark humor. Gang Dong-won (Broker) is a fantastic lead actor as slave turned swordsman Cheon Yeong. His swift swordsmanship is unbelievable and his dramatic acting is captivating. I really liked him here as he’s just awesome. I was engaged by his serious voice and piercing eyes, while his physical combat prowess is undeniable. Park Jeong-min is great as the military official’s son Lee Jong-ryeo, who befriended Cheon Yeong, but then betrays him when he’s older. His swordplay is also impressive and fast in dazzling duels. Cha Seung-won is a riot as the despicably cruel, selfish, and careless King Seonjo, who rules over Joseon in Korea. Kim Shin-rok is enchanting and cool as the tough civilian militia lady with her staff named Beom-dong. She’s really fierce and is the ideological opposite of the conservative appeasers. Jin Seon-kyu is great as the militia leader Kim Ja-ryeong, with his wisdom and false loyalty to the vicious king. He represents people that blindly follow their rulers without question. Jung Sung-il is captivating as the cruel nose cutting Japanese samurai Genshin. His swordplay is as impressive as Gang Dong-won. Editor Han Mi-yeon’s quick cuts let us see every awesome sword stroke and slash. The scenes feel cut at a brisk pace, making Uprising feel like a fast 126 minutes. Cinematographer Ju Sung-lim’s wide shots for all the battles are illuminating. All the camera moves are engaging too. Executive producer and legendary Korean director Park Chan-wook is all the cooler for getting Uprising made. Choi Jong-ha’s bright daylight lighting is excellent like the shadowy night-time scenes. Production designer Lee Na-gyeom’s fancy palace sets look striking with a period aesthetic. Visual effects artists Jung Chul-min and Choi Min-ho provide wicked dismemberment of limbs with realistic CGI and gore. Stunts from Ryu Seong-cheol and Seo Ji-oh look fearsome. Composer Cho Young-wuk’s exciting film score is a blast. Sound designers Cho Min-ho and Kim Suk-won capture every blade clang with loud rings and clear voice recordings. Costume designer Cho Sang-kyung’s period robes and armor look fabulous. In conclusion, Uprising is a thoroughly entertaining swordplay film with touching Korean history and characters. It’s one of the best films on Netflix for sure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Nick S The story keeps you entertained, feeling suspense, wanting more and the action/choreography is absolutely excellent.
