Critics Consensus

Given the subject matter, Valkyrie could have been an outstanding historical thriller, but settles for being a mildly entertaining, but disposable yarn.

Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Valkyrie, as field-commanded by director Bryan Singer, succeeds on its own terms as a handsome hybrid of conspiracy thriller and history lesson, of Mission: Impossible and The Day of the Jackal. Rated: B Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Dylan Rainforth The Age (Australia) A historically respectful, morally careful film. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 5, 2009 Full Review Eddie Cockrell Sydney Morning Herald When he is at the top of his game, as he is here, Cruise's charisma is blinding. Jan 29, 2009 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Valkyrie could be a stronger thriller but where it succeeds is in spreading awareness of the German Resistance. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It lacks the anticipated edge-of-your-seat experience, but it conveys the events with a cool ease and an admirable eye for detail. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 1, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Though it may not not the best WWII movie to premiere this year, it still supplies the thrills it promises. JetSetKevvv Even though it had Tom Cruise in it it, (which I try to avoid Tom Cruise movies like the plague as (1). I don't think he's that great of an actor and (2). it's super hard for me to get past his offset, which actually centers his bucked out rabbit tooth/teeth to his mouth), it was still an awesome, historical movie! I took my dad to see it late one night after I got off from work & we both greatly enjoyed the movie! I have a bad habit of falling asleep in movies that don't have enough action or that can't keep my attention (which is hard to do with my ADHD but Valkyrie kept my full attention all throughout the entire length of the movie). I've since seen it again on several occasions now that it's been released to both DVD & available to watch on several different online streaming service providers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/22 Full Review Johannes S Although it has some historical inaccuracies here and there, this movie is an awesome screen adaptation of the coup on Hitler with great performances. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Audience Member The fact that it's based on true stories makes it even more interesting to watch, the way they operate the attempts and such is amazing honestly, the story telling really gets to the point too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Leaburn O Not too bad a retelling and made very dramatic but knowing the ending before the coup makes it a hard sell. That sell is made even harder by a cast with unadulterated Yank accents, led by Cruise. If not hiring German actors, at least put on the hammy accents. Not the best war film. Watched on DVD. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Gortee U Good movie, tho there's just loads of dialoge and the beginning of the movie was just a talk show and nothing more. But i liked the ending Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Andres B Super entertaining movie that gets better with age. The whole cast is fantastic and Singer gives a lesson in filmmaking.
