Critics Consensus

Victoria's single-take production is undeniably impressive, but it's also an effective drama in its own right -- and one that juggles its tonal shifts as deftly as its technical complexities.

Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Schipper and his young team may not be up there with Hitchcock but they tell a good story. When it comes to pain, these kids cut to the chase. Rated: 4/5 Apr 3, 2016 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) More than a technical prodigy, Victoria is an authentic piece of cinematic magic. Rated: 5/5 Apr 3, 2016 Full Review Lisa Mullen Sight & Sound Bolstered by an atmospheric score by Nils Frahm and masterful performances by its young leads... the result is a lively and engrossing exercise in creative swagger. Mar 31, 2016 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Victoria manages to pulse with lasting energy, displaying just how incredible, devastating, thrilling and painful even two hours of life, spent really living, can be. Aug 1, 2023 Full Review Kat Halstead Common Sense Media Filmed in one shot, this low-budget German crime drama is an unexpected triumph. Rated: 4/5 Jan 25, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Schipper's technique, shooting the entire movie in one continuous shot, over dozens of locations without the aid of special effects or CGI (or an editor, I guess), is flashy and eye grabbing, but more importantly lends a sense of immediacy to the story. A.L.Jude P This movie is awful to and if this was made in the Hollywood at least it would have been watchable. As usual Europium made movies lack of pragmatism and more than 2/3 of its running time just waste to point at single shot and edifices etc... Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Devin O This movie sucks so bad it’s hard to find words to describe it. I’ve never felt so frustrated and ready for a movie to end in my life. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review S R 1001 movies to see before you die (added later). This movie touched on so many issues: youth aimlessness, youth failures, EU crime, EU police, EU workforce, raves, EU prisons, organized crime. All in a shaky camera format made it a little odd, but more real, like we were along for the crazy ride. The whole time I was worried about the girl, but I guess she did alright. The police reaction at the end seemed a bit over the top and too fast, but then again i've never been part of it. Were the morals good? No. But I guess they don't need to be. RUS. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review John P Many people miss the possible point of the film , which could even be interpreted as a supernatural horror. It turns on when Victoria plays the Mephisto Waltz when Victoria reveals her real character and changes from a seemingly innocent in danger , to become the Faustian protagonist who will witness and in some way facilitate the doom of all the others while she walks away freely. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/23 Full Review Roos S It was an interesting watch, and the 2+ hours did not feel too long in my opinion. The acting and the story capture the vibe of an out-of-control party night well, but borders on plain illogical instances that I just couldn't get over, and therefore I really could not get into this film. In particular, the fact that she did not know them beforehand and just agreed and followed along. I feel the story could have addressed the motivation of the characters just a tad more, and that would have made the movie a lot better for me. I feel this was attempted with hints of their back story, but I would have enjoyed knowing more. From a technical perspective, the one-shot take was impressive, and I do believe it is appropriate for the story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s Despite its shortcomings, Sebastian Schipper's Victoria needs to be seen for its wild one-take shot spanning well over two hours. The plot is simplistic: after a night of partying in Berlin, a young woman meets four men on her way home and eventually agrees to partake in a robbery as the getaway driver. The characters are simplistic: they are drunken louts who continually make bad decisions, traits most viewers will have trouble relating to. Additionally, some of the dialogue early on is difficult to understand, probably due to the logistics of the lengthy take, an annoying but forgivable sin. But the single extended take is a joy to watch, an unimaginable feat considering the action sequences and the tight quarters often involved, and more than compensates for the film's inadequacies.
