Guy Lodge Variety The final result is a mixed hessian bag of Kawase's best and worst creative impulses; still, buoyed by Binoche's ever-disarming presence, it should be her most widely distributed work to date. If it's still exotic to you, be prepared to merely admire it. Rated: 4.5/5 Mar 1, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Once Upon a Time, There was a devoted hermit who lived in the woods. The sky loved this hermit very much and decided to give this hermit any wish he wanted, under one condition: the hermit should never forget his mission. In his studies of devotion, this hermit learned about a great rainbow named Maya. He fell to his knees and said "Please sky, let me know your great color!" and the sky said "As you wish. And now your mission for me is to fetch me a glass of water." The hermit looked at the sky, "Are you kidding me? A glass of water is SO easy" and the sky laughed "Yes. It is. Enjoy Maya." A water glass appeared in the hermit's hand, and he held it out in front of him as he started his journey into Maya for the first time, knowing if he always held the glass out to lead him, he would never forget the mission from the sky. Water was hard to find in Maya, though. First he found what looked to be a large lake, but he scooped the glass and it filled with sand. This happened many times as he journeyed a long ways, only finding enough water to quench his own thirst, and his glass for the sky remained empty. The hermit started to get very upset, and he was losing hope when a large farmhouse appeared. His empty glass led him to the door and he knocked on it, and the most beautiful woman appeared and he immediately fell in love. The glass dropped from his hand and shattered into a million pieces, and the farm girl swept them up, and they lived happily ever after. One year a great storm hit, and the farm was flooded. Everything the hermit had accumulated was washed away (things far too sad for this author to mention, but the spiritual texts do). The hermit stood with his empty hands out as he cried and the last of the flood washed over him. When the rain stopped, he looked at his hands and there was now a full glass of water. The hermit looked up at the sky and held up the full glass of water, "I forgot my mission!" and the sky laughed "I did not."
