Matthew St. James (Edward Asner) is a leading surgeon who has gradually become an alcoholic. After a drunken driving incident, his family realizes Matthew has a problem, so his son, Dr. Hayward (Gary Cole), comes to stay with his father and help him. But Hayward, also a surgeon, is like his father in another way: He too has a severe addiction. Hayward hides his need for morphine and amphetamines, but the denial of both doctors about their problems makes it difficult for either to change.
