Budd Wilkins Slant Magazine Fernando Arrabal’s Viva la Muerte embodies the surrealist desire to meld the real and the dreamlike in the filmmaker’s recollections of his youth during the Spanish Civil War. Sep 4, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Overall, an important film, one that is not for everyone, and a film that is sometimes a bit of a challenge to watch and keep watching due to losing the attention between the more brutal imagery sequences. Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ....trigger warnings have to apply…a film like Viva la muerte! and a film-maker like Arrabal aren’t bothered about sparing your finer feelings; this is an angry, emotional film with a loaded attitude to the corrosive effect of politics on the personal… Rated: 4/5 Sep 5, 2024 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Rated: 4/5 Aug 5, 2005 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Fernando Arrabal's cult film is a mix of blood & gore, bodily fluids, animal killings and nudity. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Imagine if you will, a recut of Pan's Labyrinth. With all the fantasy scenes cut out and replaced with scenes from a snuff film directed by Andy Warhol. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the most violent films I've seen in a long time, and also one of the most mesmerizing. The film's reflection on damaged family life is surprisingly refreshing. The boy who plays the main character does a perfect job. The look of the film is just simply perfect and the film's ending is unforgettable. This is a must see. If you loved El Topo, this film explores similar territory. Check this out! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Surreal and experimental movie about the Spanish civil war. Lots of unexplained and rather disturbing imagery, and a haunting soundtrack, but not as great as Jodorowki's work which this reminds me heavily of (and who made a movie about the same story called "Fando y Lis"). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Early seventies Spanish surrealism. Not bad, but a bit shallow and deliberately outre. However... it's only 90 minutes, so it doesn't outlast its welcome. One for fans of Jodorowsky and Wojciech Has. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This film did disturbed me with the animal cruelty in it i did see it as a alright film but it is not for the weak, it could of been better as a surreal film but with the cruielty in it, it did put me off if you blank it out it is a very good film so all up it is a good film minus the animal cruielty.
