      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It desperately wants to be frothy and fun, but Walking on Sunshine is crass and calculated -- and a poor substitute for the jukebox musicals it attempts to emulate.

Soph W My childhood favourite. Love the cheesy plot and the songs. I genuinely don’t understand how you could hate it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/27/24 Full Review Cristian F Brilliant must watch film, thoroughly enjoyed it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Jamie j It was a good fun daft film. Not a bad film, worth a giggle Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Emma C I love this movie and I think it is probably very misunderstood by most people who are expecting too much and trying over think it. Yes there are a few moments of wooden acting, but it is light hearted, comedic fun with a cute love story and has certainly roused my interest in visiting Puglia in Italy. The biggest shame for me is how they put Leona Lewis in the back row of the chorus. A powerful and beautiful voice such as hers and sadly it is not showcased in this film, also for some bizarre reason she is always dressed in too many layers and hiding her gorgeous figure!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/11/23 Full Review Naomi P Although others may think it is a stupid movie with bad acting it is just a little boy meets girl scenario with some fabulous eighties tunes. Some of the acting is not great but not terrible - the leading man can act and looks more beautiful than anyone else. It is a fun film witham a beautiful setting, not trying to court the critics and that, I think, makes it a great movie to cheer me up and it works every time. There is an added bonus too that I am now smitten with Giulio Berruti and wish he was in more. Kate Muir Times (UK) I am delighted to say that in the cheerily crass Walking on Sunshine we have a strong contender for the worst British movie of 2014. Rated: 1/5 Jul 7, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) You may find yourself tickled, providing your toes don't curl up so far that they actually stab you in the heart. Rated: 2/5 Jun 29, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The film-makers (who also directed Streetdance) strike a frantic tempo but Walking on Sunshine is still often like treading through treacle. Rated: 2/5 Jun 27, 2014 Full Review Julian Lytle Punch Drunk Critics I was really rooting for this to be dope but it just wasn't. It came off as a young woman version of "Mamma Mia" without a lot of the charm. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 11, 2020 Full Review Yip Wai Yee The Straits Times (Singapore) An idyllic seaside holiday, a bright-eyed ingenue, a cheery retro soundtrack - all incorporated into a big-hearted musical. Sounds familiar? Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 24, 2018 Full Review Tracy Moore Common Sense Media Frothy musical is a fun watch; some drinking, innuendo. Rated: 3/5 Aug 11, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews
