Daniel C. M I really wanted to be a contrarian and like this movie; also because i am one of those people who genuinely sees the good--and has a lot of fun--in every "bad" movie and rates it way higher than most people think it deserves; but i just can't. As a BIG lover of Sci-Fi, specially Japanese, this movie is very disappoiting. There is a lot of potential for a "it's so bad, it's good", but it just ends up being really boring and generic; i fell asleep a little after halfway through. The pratical effects ARE cool though, and the only reason i don't rate this movie a lot lower. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Silly Japanese movie was made to cash in on the Star Wars craze but is more a remake of Toho's 60s sci-fier Atragon but set in space and directed by Jun Fukuda, who made some of the worst of the Godzilla series in the late 60s and 70s. The FX are bad even for these type of films and there is a lot of stock footage from earlier Toho efforts. Some nostalgic charm but not enough to make this really fun. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member "We also need Jimmy, from NASA." A fun movie, but a pretty silly one, War in Space feels like it's at least ten years older than it actually is. With plenty of stock footage from other similar movies, and a mostly stock story, it still manages to be enjoyable. Good model work, as usual. Fun sets and costumes. And some trippy music for spice. But things really get good when the horned Chewbacca shows up. Oh, yeah. If watching for humor value, watch it with the English language dub on. Otherwise, the subtitles are pretty good. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Boooring! Only highlight is the sight of a horned Wookie holding the leash of a hostage leather-clad Japanese cutie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A big, loud mash-up of Battle in Outer Space and Atragon while simultaneously ripping off Star Wars which makes for one fun movie! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Ah, old Japan sci-fi. Spaceships that look like boats, one female astronaut in a too-tight yellow jumpsuit, a hero with helmet hair, an angry wookie-viking mix with an ax, and Jimmy, the white dude from NASA who's simply speaking in English and dubbed over. It's just about as good/bad as it gets. The low rating is on genuine film merit, but it will live in my heart 5-stars strong. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
