It's pre-World War II Japan, and nervous playwright Hajime Tsubaki (Goro Inagaki) is hoping to get his latest work produced. However, he hasn't accounted for government censor Mutsuo Sakisaka (Kôji Yakusho), a hard-nosed character who seems determined to make his life miserable. Perfect shooting (all the angles were excellent) envelopes lengthy emotional conversations between the two. The film tells a story about how an art work is purified and perfected when challenged by bureaucracy and censorship, yet the road the two personalities are taking leads to nowhere.
