Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/01/22 Full Review Audience Member One of the best movies I have ever seen amazing dialogue and great action scenes Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I love Chinese epics, and this was not disappointing at all. Well-paced,lots of fighting action and a couple of nice twists. Beautiful cinematography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member good lush historical actioner Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Good movie... This movie is the story of an Imperial Agent sent to bring to justice a murderer, his final mission before he is allowed to go home to his family in Japan. The murderer, a former army officer accused of mutiny when he refused to kill a group of women and children. The movie is the tale of their trek across the desert fighting against each other and with each other. The dialog was great, short and delivered impeccably by an incredible cast of characters. It has been a long while since I have seen such thoughtful, dramatic acting. The movie is shot mostly in the desert but it is all done beautifully and with exactly the right tone and feel. I enjoyed the period costumes and the fight scenes were extremely well choreographed. I like it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Critically panned and perhaps not the best of modern Chinese cinema, this is nonetheless pretty entertaining. Andrew Sun Hollywood Reporter The acting is uniformly compelling. Dec 1, 2004 Full Review Susan Walker Toronto Star Unfortunately, the two main protagonists, Lieutenant Li and Lai Xi, are too much the strong, silent type to engage us as heroes, or even characters. Rated: 3/5 Oct 1, 2004 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail There's no denying its visual appeal. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 1, 2004 Full Review Christopher Smith Bangor Daily News (Maine) It's too busy courting genre cliches to mine anything transcendent, which runs counter to the promise inherent in the title. Rated: B- May 2, 2007 Full Review Eric D. Snider EricDSnider.com Takes all the elements of the classic Westerns, mixes them with Eastern spiritualism, and comes out with a film that is at least noteworthy, if not especially brilliant.
