La película es una recreación del filme mexicano Somos Lo Que Somos que se hizo de forma precipitada a tan solo 3 años después de que se estrenara la película original. Esta versión de Estados Unidos genera muchos sentimientos encontrados al momento de compararla con su predecesora. En vez de ser una familia compuesta por una madre, dos hijos y una hija, aquí tenemos un padre, dos hijas y un hijo menor. La muerte del padre es reemplazada por la de la madre y mientras la película original mostraba lo que sería una común familia latina, esta recreación presenta una clásica familia americana tradicional. Mientras la familia de la película original presentaba a los jóvenes con una actitud fuerte y determinada, por más que uno de ellos dudaba al principio, la familia de esta película es claramente tradicional y conservadora. Las hijas se muestran bastante sumisas y hasta reprimidas (lo cual es algo común en las familias de esta índole) haciendo que les cueste cuestionar la autoridad del padre y el rumbo que la familia toma. La trama en el guion es mucho mejor que la versión original por agregar más profundidad al tema del canibalismo. La película original no profundizaba el tema y aquí lo hacen usando la tradición la familiar. El canibalismo suele estar vinculado a diferentes motivos, ya sea como un medio para sobrevivir al hambre o algo que se vuelve tradicional en algunas culturas. Esta película toma a ambos sumando también que el canibalismo no es aceptado por cuestiones morales en la sociedad y también por los riesgos de salud, algo que suele ser común en el consumo de carne de muchas especies si no se trata correctamente. La película incluso sabe manejar la adaptación de dicho acto a las costumbres culturales, en este caso usando la religión cristiana como ejemplo. En muchos aspectos, la película logra representar bien casos de familias o gente desesperada que recurrieron al canibalismo. Ahora la gran diferencia que existe es que la película original venía cargada con un fuerte mensaje social y se sentía bastante cruda. Esta película, por otro lado, se siente un poco más blanda y no llega a mostrar la hora en que una de las víctimas de la familia es mutilada, pero la película logra sentirse perturbadora de forma implícita dejando todo a la imaginación. Está presente el concepto de recurrir al canibalismo como último recurso para sobrevivir a la hambruna y el trasfondo que se le da es lo que reemplaza el mensaje social que tanto caracteriza la película original. Sin duda, lo que diferencia a ambas película es el aspecto cultural que tienen. La original va enfocándose más a la situación latinoamericana y esta versión se enfoca bastante en la vida estadounidense. Eso hace que ambas versiones sean películas distintas y cuál es mejor que la otra es algo muy complicado. Ambas películas son thriller dramáticos y se hicieron de forma independiente con un guion que logra tener más prioridad que las imperfecciones o limitaciones en la producción. No se puede decir con certeza si We Are What We Are está a la altura o no de su predecesora, pero sí se puede decir que es una película independiente que cumple bastante por tener un buen guion y un buen argumento. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 8/10.

Just because a film has religious characters and slow, methodical performances doesn't make it a stunning indictment of religion. We Are What We Are is closer to a soft remake of The Hills Have Eyes with less humor than much else; the characters walking around in 19th century clothing mumbling about God and tradition don't leave a lot of room for different interpretations. Thematically, this Jim Mickle film does draw interesting connections between religious fervor, family ties, and identity in a clash of nurture vs. nature. However, the premise is given away relatively early and is delivered with so many idiosyncratic design details that even the later brutality can't really bring it all together. Maybe if they used a sprig of rosemary their meals would have been more appetizing. (2.5/5)
