Dorothy Masters New York Daily News Working with neither hat nor rabbit nor hocus-pocus on his first project, the producer-director-author [Morris Engel] conjured a classic. Rated: 3.5/4 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Ben Kubasik Newsday Audiences will have no difficulty recognizing the universality of such situations. The film should have an impact on onlookers of making them better understand the actions of their own loved ones. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review TIME Staff TIME Magazine Weddings and Babies, as a technical exercise in cinema is one of the most exciting feature films the U.S. has produced in a decade. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Penelope Gilliatt Observer (UK) Twice faintly tinged with kitsch, but full of improvisational insights and beguiling mutters, with Viveca Lindfors and John Myhers gripped in a weary affair that is a painfully recognisable clinch of rows and reconciliations. Mar 6, 2024 Full Review Shadow Stage Photoplay It’s the photography -- never slick or flattering -- that brings us close to these people, to see how human beings can be funny and sad, lovable and irritating, all at once. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review P.S. Harrison Harrison's Reports John Myhers is competent as the photographer. Chiarina Barile is highly convincing as his mother. It is Viveca Lindofors who stands out in her role of his girl friend and assistant, with a powerfully, full-dimensioned enactment. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member of the three i have seen tonight, this one seems more photogenic - i love the juxtaposition in each scene. it could almost be a silent film, with the jazzy tune. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie reminded me of an old foreign film (French or Italian) even though it was filmed in NYC. Slow moving but endearing movie about a man who wants more out of life but can't ever seem to reach his goals. His old Italian mother about broke my heart. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A heartfelt and honest film about a man of 35 years unwilling to commit to marriage and having children with his long-term girlfriend. It is an episodic meditation on the weight of a relationship, no matter how good it all seems, and how one can try to disrupt any sense of harmony for the inherent urge of remaining alone. The photography of Little Italy is wonderfully shot (Engel sure knew how to shoot his city), and the subplot of the photographer's mother roaming the city without a home are somber and true. John Myhers was miscast in the lead role. He mugs it up too often, but nonetheless he still provides effect, especially during the climax in the cemetery. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Engel's (presumably) autobiographical final film benefits from vastly improved sound recording technology, but I found it less engaging than "Lovers and Lollipops". I think it's because the narrative is stronger. I was drawn to the off-the-cuff style and focus on photographic details over more overt drama. By no means did he create a standard melodrama, but I came away from the film really liking a handful of scenes rather than the entire picture. This could be the indirect result of watching it immediately after one of his other films. I expected a continuation of that tone, so it took me a bit to adjust my expectations. We'll see how it stands up if I watch it again in a few years. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
