      Critics Consensus

Despite earnest performances, Welcome to the Rileys cannot escape its belabored over-sentimentality and sluggish delivery.

Reza P Somewhat very relaxing and yet so surreal. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review Boo 2 If you like a Great drama with great acting and a story you've Never Seen before…this is The One to see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/23 Full Review John A A fairly poignant first act stagnates a bit and then shortly after the film becomes interesting somewhere in its third act, the screenwriter disappointingly ends it all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Richard M This is a really good good flick...only for advanced viewers..smart and gandolfini is him...miss him...best ....millennials stay away.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review dave s Doug and Lois Riley (James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo) are struggling to hold their marriage together after the sudden death of their teenage daughter. While on a business trip to New Orleans, Doug meets Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a 16-year-old prostitute and, in an attempt to assist her, develops a unique mentorship role with the streetwise girl. While the scenario feels improbable, it works based on the insightful script from Ken Hixon and strong performances from Gandolfini and Stewart. Unfortunately, things slide significantly when Lois arrives on the scene unannounced as the relationship between her and the wayward teen never rings true under the circumstances. Welcome to the Rileys is a noble attempt at tackling issues of grief and redemption, but ultimately falls flat over the last half of the film. Empire Magazine Rated: 3/5 Nov 25, 2011 Full Review Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard If it could be too slow-burning for some, it is at least a refreshing change from a pattern of film-making that never gives you a moment's rest because there is nothing under the surface. Rated: 3/5 Nov 19, 2011 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It's a well-made film, and New Orleans is crisply and interestingly shot by cinematographer Christopher Soos, but this ultimately looks like a TV movie dressed up for the big screen. Rated: 2/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) The effort from the cast is most dignified, because without them the film would drown in embarrassing tedium. [Full review in Spanish] Oct 6, 2022 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens With a subtle emotional build, intricately nuanced and believable performances that are deeply affective, touching the heart, Welcome to The Rileys rolls out the welcome mat to each of us. Nov 16, 2019 Full Review Edward Frost CineVue Takes clichéd storytelling and predictability and runs with it, padding out a 110-minute runtime with a story that has the ability to be compelling if it wasn't for the fact that we have seen it all before.
