Audience Member Despite the fact that this movie has 4 of MGM's biggest stars, it can't decide if it's a sophisticated comedy or a romantic drama. It turns out it's just a melodrama with too much dialogue that is neither witty or convincing. Robert Taylor's character is a so poorly written and so poorly acted that he comes off as sniveling cad no woman would want. Herbert Marshall could never be the romantic figure he portrays. Joan Crawford as the protagonist can't compete with her rival, the one shining light of the movie, Greer Garson. Unfortunately, even she can't save this absurd script. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Dreadfully stagy and talky. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Joan Crawford always seems out of place in comedies to me, but I suppose I always find her acting style rather odd and out of place in most films. I guess it's just especially pronounced in comedies. Joan plays a novelist who's in love with her publisher, Herbert Marshall, despite meeting his charming wife, Greer Garson. She also has a dear friend played by Robert Taylor, so I'm sure you can guess where film ends up. For a romantic comedy, there is little romantic spark and not a lot of laughs. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Glossy drama played by super professionals. Spring Byington is cutely addled in a film full of people acting terribly adult. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member ok remake but i like the 1933 version best Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has some wonderful lines delivered smartly by Robert Taylor and Spring Byington mostly. But as Kent wisely says, to believe that Herbert Marshall AND Robert Taylor would pass over gorgeous, classy Greer Garson for manly, pointy, and harsh Joan Crawford is stretching the imagination to a ridiculous extent. It still has redeeming performances and Taylor is charming and adorable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
