After only three dates, wide-eyed Millie (Kim Hunter) marries Paul Baxter (Dean Jagger), a traveling salesman who is called away on business shortly after the wedding. Sending a telegram from Philadelphia, Paul arranges to meet Millie in New York City, but fails to show up. Millie's old friend Fred (Robert Mitchum) appears instead, bringing news of an unsolved murder at a Philadelphia hotel. Because Millie hardly knows Paul, she and Fred begin to suspect that he may be the wanted killer.
