Co produced, written and directed by Feo Aladag with Umay (Sibel Kekilli) originally has strong roots from Turkey, she decides she does not want to be with her abusive husband anymore taking their child with them, moving back with her parents in Germany. Because her parents still carry with them Turkish customs, the family particularly the father and her brother prefer for her to return their son back to him. She objects since he is abusive.

Excellent debut film by Feo Aladag has already won some 30 int'l awards; 10 of these awards are for lead actress Sibel Kekilli in a touching role of a Turkish wife and mother who violates tradition by leaving her abusive husband and taking her little child with her..

cinegeek.de Wer kennt diese Charaktere: Den weichen und letztlich gebrochenen Vater, die verständnisvolle Mutter und den durchgeknallten Bruder? Sie alle treten auf in die Fremde. Ihre hervorragende Charaktereigenschaft: Türkisch zu sein. Und so funktioniert das filmisch: Ein junger Mann nähert sich einer jungen Frau von hinten. Sie hält ein Kind auf dem Arm und bemerkt ihn erst, nachdem er sie angetippt hat. Sie wendet sich um, er hält ihr eine Waffe an den Kopf. So beginnt Feo Aladags Debüt und so wird es auch enden. Der junge Mann heisst Acar (Serhad Can), die Frau mit dem Baby Umay, seine ältere Schwester (Sibel Kekilli). Der Film beginnt in Berlin, dann muss Umay in Istanbul heiraten. Ihr Mann Kemal (Ufuk Bayraktar) schlägt sie und sperrt das Kind in ein dunkles Zimmer. Umay flieht zurück nach Berlin zu ihrer Familie. Alle Konflikte im Film entzünden sich immer beim Essen, weil da die ganze Familie zusammensitzt. Als Umay erzählt, sie würde nicht zu ihrem Mann zurückkehren, fragt ihr Bruder Mehmet (Tamer Yigit) nur, ob sie etwas gesagt hätte. Sie hat, doch es war unerwünscht! Sie ist eine Frau, die nicht ausbrechen darf und kann. Wagt sie es doch mit Hilfe der Polizei, wird sie geächtet. Der Schritt zum Ehrenmord ist dann nicht mehr weit. Die Familie wird in Zukunft gemieden werden. Für die Verheiratung ihrer zweiten Tochter werden sie mehr zahlen müssen; wir dürfen das als "Risiko-Zuschlag" interpretieren. Fortan wird die Familie leiden, weil ihnen Ehre mehr bedeutet als Liebe. Die Wahrnehmung der Deutschen bezüglich dieses Themas ist grob und wird hier auch so bedient. Einzig das verträumte Gesicht von Sibel Kekilli kann dem Film eine menschliche Note verleihen. Sie ist nicht nur Opfer und "türkisch", sondern eine "richtige" junge Frau.
