Rob Hughes Uncut Magazine [UK] Ultimately, as one former bandmate maintains, he just wanted to be understood. This doc goes some way to realising that ambition. Rated: 3.5/5 May 27, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Ravenswood R Kind of a dull documentary. Lacks any kind of zest whatsoever. By the books, go through the motions interviews and footage. Interesting for what it is, the story of a guy who was pretty good, better than average, but almost certainly no musical genius as this documentary suggests. He did work very hard, and that put him in the studio for so much time that he produced a lot of recorded output. Music that took a lot of work, and also takes a lot of work to listen to. He took the talent he had and pushed it absolutely as far as it could go, which was short of greatness but through no fault of effort or character. No one in this documentary has anything particularly interesting to say, but if you are a Jay Bennett fan, this might be for you. In the end, for-profit corporate health care contributed to - or caused - his death, a sad and disturbing fact. Health care for all! End capitalism at once and free humanity from enslavement to the rich who must have more money, even if it means you die. If you watch this doc for Wilco info, rest assured the Jeff Tweedy and Wilco coverage is boring and tedious as usual. Greg Kot appears, so it is academic and a bit cringeworthy when he opines on things he should definitely have stayed out of.
