Small-time crook Salvatore (Giancarlo Giannini) scrapes together a living as an interloper at a hospital in Naples, Italy. When widow Luciella (Lina Sastri) seeks his help to track down the body of her dead husband -- who committed suicide by lighting himself on fire to protest a labor dispute -- Salvatore is immediately suspicious of her story. Sure enough, he discovers that Luciella collects payoffs for the Mafia, and so decides to get in on some of the action for himself.

Synopsis
