Critics Consensus

White House Down benefits from the leads' chemistry, but director Roland Emmerich smothers the film with narrative clichés and choppily edited action.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express There is a certain comfort you can derive from these predictable mega-budget monsters. Trouble is, it goes on too long. It has several climactic moments, but every time you ready for the exit, the film bounces back again for the next round. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 19, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) At least has the good grace to laugh at itself as it rolls out the dingbat-daft action-movie cliches. Rated: 3/5 Sep 15, 2013 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times It is appallingly funny in a way that few parodies ever manage. But it is undeniably exciting. Rated: 2/5 Sep 15, 2013 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine As an action film, White House Down does its job: it entertains and offers some very well-filmed scenes. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 6/10 Sep 11, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Never does White House Down surprise us or go in a direction we didn’t see coming. It’s all been manufactured to proven specifications and refuses to deviate from customary action movie schematics. Rated: 2/4 Sep 2, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Emmerich’s action is repetitive, hackneyed, and not the least bit exciting. P S We've seen too many movies like this. This one feels like it copied from other white house seige movies. The scripting unoriginal, almost lazy. The narrative predictable. I only finished the movie because it was action-packed, but was not entirely hooked. I could go for a moment to the kitchen or bathroom and not miss anything in the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Laurian D Far fetched? Absolutely. Cliché filled? Sort of. But, boy, was I entertained! Charming leads, explosive action, satisfying conclusion. Underrated blockbuster. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/25 Full Review Tony W Far fetched rubbish. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Carson P Emmerich has created a visceral amusing and thriller action disaster film that has enough tension to lee you invested we got some great acting, with witty dialogue, and a witty screenplay Tatum playing a John Mclane type charachter trying to save the president and stop terrorists from taking over the White House it’s got great humor that delivers laughs and likeable charachters we root for, the cast and crew are phenomenal Jamie fox who resembles Obama in the role is great as the president james woods is a strong antagonist and the hero is just amazing I watched this stunned and thrilled with a climax of shootouts and chases and it was awesome emmerich never disappoints this is definetly one of his better films Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Kelly H So much overacting, especially at the end.
