Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Brown didn't win my sympathy for a moment. What just barely saves this film is the fact that we're not supposed to like the Brown character. Audience Member John Duigan's film was unusual in 80s Australian cinema for its contemporary setting, jaded attitudes, and willingness to engage morally complex situations, yet the film is never gripping, perhaps because it lacks the clarity of structure needed to give a perspective on the characters' confusions.
