Critics Consensus

This workmanlike movie musical lacks the electricity of the stage version (and its cinematic inspiration), but it's bolstered by strong performances by Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

John Skow TIME Magazine So much wit and talent and energy crowd the screen in this lavishly filmed variant of the Oz story that it is depressing to realize that the production never had a chance. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Director Sidney Lumet has created what amounts to a love letter to the city of New York, which he equates with Oz. Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It's good that the Scarecrow is the first traveling companion she meets; Michael Jackson fills the role with humor and warmth. Rated: 3/4 Jun 16, 2018 Full Review KT Mahe For Your Reference Podcast The reimagining of The Wiz positions itself as a classic in its own right. Emotion holds through memorable set pieces and legendary performances. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …it’s the dirty-glitter staging, not the show that’s the problem, not helped by Lumet shooting all the musical sequences from such an extreme distance that we can rarely see the cast’s faces… Rated: 3/5 Apr 7, 2024 Full Review Richard Schertzer ScreenAnarchy Whether you love or hate this movie, there is no denying how memorable it truly is and how impactful it has been on the culture of Oz enthusiasts and Black cinema, alike. Blu B I got a soft spot for it. It's very entertaining and half decently made overall. But it has one of the most gonzo like pacings I have ever seen. This goes a freakin dime from nothign special to Evil Dead II type insanity (no gore) back to something cool and fun, to dragging and being boring, to sometimes I don't even know. It's a fever dream sometimes. Like someone said hey let's take The Wizard of Oz and mix it with the Rocky Horror Picture Show and see what happens just because it's New Hollywood and we can do whatever in this time. The set designs are kind of cool and it's defintely not in the slightest trying to copy the 1939 one. It's 100% it's own thing for better or worse. This just needed to shave off 30 minutes because it has no reason to be over 2 hours and you can feel it during some of the musical numbers that don't involve the main characters. It drags BAD during some of those. But there are some numbers that are freakin Ear Worms and others I don't even know or are forgettable. Diana Ross and the basic camerawork here are among the weakest things. She's just ok and despite having some good numbers in the end, she just straight disappears quite often because she is forgotten about because of all the crazy Super Mario Bro's / Highlander II type nonsense moments. This will straight just fly off the rails at points to only turn on a dime and become super catchy and have you wanting to dance and sing. Never seen anything so Yo-Yo like in my life. It's fun honestly but it needed some trimming and a better lead with more prescene more than anything. If your a fan of any actors in this or a entertaining but not necessarily good take on the Wizard of Oz, look no further my friend. Ease On Down The Road!!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Karen K Why didn't anyone warn me this is a horror film?! There is some seriously spooky imagery in this film, like creepy figures emerging from graffiti being one. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross are heartwarming to watch in their young innocence. The movie is worth watching just to see them. Diana Ross has just the best powerhouse meltdown belting session at the end of the movie. She was unbelievable, rest her soul. Watch this movie if you love historical classics, afrocentric cinema and/or musicals in general. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Alec B Its one of the strangest musicals ever made. I won't make a case for it being actually great but its hard to really dislike something that people put so much effort into. The urban dreamscape style does make the movie watchable along with a number of supporting performances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Kris C First watched it as a 7 year old and it still holds up. Think this reimagining of the story resonated more because of the big city backdrop and it still holds up. A fantastic film that's visually and musically stunning. Not usually keen on musicals but the music in this left me wanting more. Rewatching it as an adult with my child has been one of the highlights of this year! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Rebekah R I don't know what people aren't seeing. The Wiz is a work of art, visually captivating, yes the story kind of drags on but I don't trust anyone who tells me the music in this movie isn't phenomenal. I've been watching this since I was little and it moves me to this day. It will forever and always be a masterpiece. I don't care what anyone says. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review Ian W What the hell? Fair play to Michael Jackson for keeping up the energy levels. But this is an extraordinarily bad film. It gets 1/10 because it made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions. (Unintentionally). Utter dross. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
