Critics Consensus

Though Hugh Jackman gives his all, he can't help X-Men Origins: Wolverine overcome a cliche-ridden script and familiar narrative.

Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Revenge soon grips Logan when his love is taken away, but Tsotsi director Gavin Hood seems bored by the sibling rivalry; even the Frankensteinian weaponizing of a human body feels rushed. Mason M This movie is incredibly underrated!! It is paced amazingly, and the story is gripping. I am a comic fan, so I already knew the story so it could be a biased opinion, but I absolutely loved this movie. It is one of the best Hugh Jackman Wolverine films. I can recommend this film any day of the week! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Turner M IT'S VERY UNDERRATED The Deadpool at the end tho smh Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Brian M the 2 things i can't forgive this film for is the ugly CGI and the Deadpool in this movie. other than that, it's still entertaining. 5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Rick C X-Men Origins: Wolverine is not the worst superhero movie I've ever seen. Actually, after having also recently re-watched the original X-Men trilogy I can say I enjoy this one more than some of those. X-MO:W is definitely riddled with flaws, but if regarded as a standalone movie within its own canon I think it can be judged less harshly. It's a good example of why immortal, or at least long-lived, characters are hard to portray in the live-action medium. Because the actor himself can't not age, if one were to watch the X-Men movies chronologically it would appear that Logan doesn't age a day through a fair chunk of American history, only to get younger in the original trilogy, and then suddenly age like normal in the later sequels. Also, speaking of inconsistencies, is Liev Schreiber's Sabertooth supposed to be the same character seen in the first X-Men movie? There is no resemblance whatsoever, made worse by the fact that the "original Sabertooth" was not and could not have been written with this prequel's character development in mind. Especially considering Logan was given a fine backstory in the original trilogy, one could argue that a whole movie dedicated to his backstory was unnecessary. Finally, there is the elephant in the room... Weapon XI is probably what killed this movie's momentum the most. If he was an original character made up for the movie I think history would have forgotten him; but calling him Deadpool and proceeding to do such a disservice to Deadpool's character was almost certainly irreconcilable for fans at the time. TL;DR: X-MO:W is enjoyable by itself, but only by itself. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Scott M Paint by numbers action movie. Nothing special. No real thought or effort put into the story. The acting is decent. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Adam P I don't understand the low ratings on this film. I love the origin story starting from childhood and progressing through historical events. The later Deadpool parts don't fit because of the Deadpool films. Though the multiverse clears that up. It's a solid Wolverine film and shouldn't be at the bottom of the ranking lists. I would love to see more Wolverine and Sabertooth in the future. This Sabertooth was well done. I recommend watching this film if you are a Wolverine fan. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
