Audience Member Great because I was in it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Watchable entertaining romp Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Best in Show: James Purefoy One for the future: Gina McKee Stand-out scene: Dinner party Brainer or no-brainer: Brainer Stands up to one viewing or repeated?: Repeated DVD commentary any good?: n/a TV The last Coky Giedroyc film I saw was the fantastic Stella Does Tricks, which grimly depicted the squalid life of a Glaswegian prostitute plying her trade in London. This comedy drama is set in photogentic Edinburgh and boasts an impressive cast in the likes of Gina McKee, James Purefoy, Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Wilson and James Nesbitt. A sparky script and beautiful settings help the movie roll along pleasantly and unlike Bedrooms and Hallways and Born Romantic et. al. this has an individual, semi-realistic watchability about it. As for Helena BC's Scottish accent as Cora, let's just say that it makes Tom Cruise's attempt at Irish in Far and Away look passable. Full marks for effort but Rachel Griffiths in Very Annie-Mary she aint. Gina McKee is Ellen, a promising cartoonist who falls for gambling-addict philanderer Daniel (Purefoy). She meets and is befriended by Cora in a pub and they start up a friendship. Their amity is threatened however, when Daniel beds Cora (she's unware he's Ellen's Daniel) and fathers her child. An examination of the differences between romantic love and friendship, this promises much for Coky Giedroyc's future as a film-maker and what's more, the future of the British film industry. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A feel-good movie you can watch again and again, always seeing something you didn't the previous time. A jamboree of visual delights, good fun and (unlike so many) with a story. Solid stuff.
