What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overloaded action and a cliched villain take the focus away from otherwise strong performers and resonant themes, making X-Men: Apocalypse a middling chapter of the venerable superhero franchise.

Ariana Vives Bitch Media It wasn't terrible, and I don't think it entirely deserves its dismal 47 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But it should serve as a wake-up call regarding the franchise's future direction. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review Antonia Quirke Financial Times The set-up is sometimes quite intriguing. Especially when it features Michael Fassbender as Magneto (massively magnetic). Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Compared to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (a convoluted snore) or Captain America: Civil War (bombastic and contrived) X-Men: Apocalypse is the one that's worth the price of admission. Nov 8, 2016 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Much of the film is spent either reminding and recalling previous events in other films, or foreshadowing events that are due to happen in a future sequel. The sheer quantity of character threads fracture the film’s structure. Rated: 6/10 Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s hard to ignore how the film turns a blind eye to several glaring plot problems. I mean am I silly to think they might address the 10 million people killed when a city is leveled? Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review If there's one characteristic that sets the X-Men franchise apart from the MCU, its how rarely the films remain true to the comics, both in their storylines and characters. Stephen C Success in 2 hours and 23 minutes!!!! Rated PG-13 for Brief Strong Language, Action and Destruction, Sequences of Violence and Some Suggestive Images!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $155,000,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/25 Full Review Mate P X-Men: Apocalypse is trying to have higher stakes than ever, a more menacing villain than ever and like most of the time this happens, it doesn't work. The antagonist is too powerful, the stakes are too high and that takes me out of it, I can't take it seriously even though it has its moments. For example I like how Magneto starts the movie, but the arc he has is the same as before. It also uses too many characters. I watched First Class a month and Days of Future Past a couple of days before this one and I just couldn't remember many of the characters. Also, many of the dialogues are bad and sound unnatural. This just does not feel like Bryan Singer. I think this might have been rewritten and reshot by others. The cinematography is just so much less creative than it was in Days of Future Past. The casting is good, the acting too. X-Men: Apocalypse bored me and the way everything was trying to be more awesome, it became ridiculous. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/25 Full Review Gregory S I so wanted this movie to be good. But, it wasn’t. Quicksilver was the best part unfortunately. But, it is worth getting through for him. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review R H So terrible on so many levels. There are dozens of consistencies within the film itself. Not just in the character development or in lack of continuity between the comics, but just in the basic wheelchairs that professor x uses, clothes that people are wearing, situations that people are in. This is one sloppy sloppy movie that seems to have one goal, and that goal being to destroy X-Men movies forever. It's bad enough that they mess with timelines and completely discount origin stories, but so much emphasis is given to such trivial things. I hope that one Marvel starts making X-Men movies they will stay extremely close to the comic timeline and not introduce other characters out of sequence with the comics. And mostly acting is kind of terrible. Lastly, the last guy who plays professor x is pretty pathetic and totally miscast for the film. Moreover, professor x was not a lecherous creeper in the books. And this makes him look like almost a comical bumbling teenage minded creep Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review James E A lot of fun, but the plot seems lacking at times and there are a few too many X-men reintroduced while also focusing on old characters, making the pacing feel a bit confused. Quicksilver steals the best scene again and Charles and Erik continue to be the best part of the film. Apocalypse himself is a bit under done and disappointing.
