What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overloaded action and a cliched villain take the focus away from otherwise strong performers and resonant themes, making X-Men: Apocalypse a middling chapter of the venerable superhero franchise.

Ariana Vives Bitch Media It wasn't terrible, and I don't think it entirely deserves its dismal 47 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But it should serve as a wake-up call regarding the franchise's future direction. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review Antonia Quirke Financial Times The set-up is sometimes quite intriguing. Especially when it features Michael Fassbender as Magneto (massively magnetic). Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Compared to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (a convoluted snore) or Captain America: Civil War (bombastic and contrived) X-Men: Apocalypse is the one that's worth the price of admission. Nov 8, 2016 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Much of the film is spent either reminding and recalling previous events in other films, or foreshadowing events that are due to happen in a future sequel. The sheer quantity of character threads fracture the film’s structure. Rated: 6/10 Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s hard to ignore how the film turns a blind eye to several glaring plot problems. I mean am I silly to think they might address the 10 million people killed when a city is leveled? Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review If there's one characteristic that sets the X-Men franchise apart from the MCU, its how rarely the films remain true to the comics, both in their storylines and characters. Steven M X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) is a thrilling and visually spectacular addition to the X-Men franchise that delivers high-octane action, compelling character moments, and a nostalgic ’80s vibe. Directed by Bryan Singer, this superhero epic embraces its comic book roots with a bold, colorful aesthetic and a story that balances grandiose stakes with intimate emotional beats. Set in 1983, the film introduces En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), a godlike mutant awakening after millennia to reshape the world in his image. While some have critiqued his motivations, Isaac’s commanding performance imbues the villain with a chilling intensity, making him a formidable threat. The film shines in its ensemble cast, with standout performances from Michael Fassbender as a deeply conflicted Magneto and James McAvoy as the ever-optimistic Professor X. Their emotional depth anchors the story, particularly in Magneto’s heart-wrenching early scenes and Xavier’s inspiring leadership. The new generation of X-Men—Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp)—brings fresh energy, with each character given moments to shine. Evan Peters’ Quicksilver steals the show with a jaw-dropping slow-motion sequence set to Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” a technical marvel that’s both fun and inventive. The film’s action is a visual feast, from the explosive set pieces to the vibrant special effects, all elevated by John Ottman’s soaring score. What sets X-Men: Apocalypse apart is its heart. The themes of teamwork, hope, and standing against prejudice resonate strongly, reinforced by subtle Christian undertones, like references to prayer and the “grace of God.” While the plot juggles many characters, it sets up exciting future storylines while delivering a satisfying, action-packed adventure. Fans of the franchise will appreciate the nods to earlier films and the comic book lore, making this a must-watch for X-Men enthusiasts. It’s a fun, flawed, but ultimately rewarding chapter that proves the X-Men saga still has plenty of spark. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Saram C It has good action and it hits the storyline of X-Men Days of Future Past and we got to see Wolverine as a cameo. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review James Asher R Oh brother this guy stinks! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review David W I actually very much enjoyed this. Whilst it didn't do justice to the amazing Apocalypse Saga, taken for what it was it was actually very watchable and deserves a higher rating on RT. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review DYLANZS W I really enjoyed this film. I don't get the hate. I guess I can see how people think it wasn't handled well, especially the villain but overall the stakes were high, the cast was good and it made me keep watching as I was entertained so it was doing something right! STANDOUT: Oscar Isaac Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review John C If you've seen any of the previous X-Men movies, then you've seen them all. This one is just the same, good acting, strong action scenes, top notch actors, great acting, (QuickSilver seems to be the strongest character in this) and great action fight scenes, but that's exactly it....they're all the same. At a running time of 2 hours and 30 minutes, you start to get bored and just wait for the damn thing to be over with. It's nothing new and the story is rather tedious. Almost everyone knows who apocalypse is from the comic books! And I HATED the ending. The ending will piss you off if you're a true X-Men fan. Plus there's an extra hidden scene at the very end of the film. I mean the very, very end after the credits. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
