What to Know

Critics Consensus

You People has an outstanding cast and plenty of comedic potential -- both mostly wasted on a picture that dithers between social commentary and romantic comedy without fully committing to either.

Audience Says

A cringe comedy that's mostly just cringe, You People runs in repetitive circles and rarely gives its very funny stars anything deserving of their talents.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) It's so funny. I don't know if it'll change race relations, but it'll make you laugh. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com Now, there are enough thoughtful screen examinations of racial politics along with normalized visions of inclusive casting to make "You People" stand out as a gormless throwback. Feb 4, 2023 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Chicago Reader The film is much more interested in social embarrassment cringe and gags than it is in any sort of close examination of how racism affects interracial couples. Feb 2, 2023 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) Wastes a talented cast on unbelievable characters that are always trying to score political points. A real missed opportunity Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Because Everyone Else Has One (blog) Any yet, there's just something unbearably sanctimonious about this film; a sense of self-righteousness about its racial attitudes that is tone-deaf at best and genuinely, alarmingly hypocritical, at worst. Rated: 0/10 Aug 16, 2023 Full Review Matthew Creith Matinee With Matt "You People" has a lot going for it and is one of the funnier movies that Netflix has in its current catalog of new content. It also feels genuine, with the Los Angeles background making for a different take on a city mostly stereotyped for glitz. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Laura Lauren London is delightful and funny. Jonah is clever and funny as usual. Eddie is funny as always. I love to see him in roles we are not used to. love the proof matter and the discussion it provokes. appreciated seeing these perspectives on the big screen discussed in a healthy way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Ina Hilariously funny, great cast, beautifully shot. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Mbusi M Super flat. No texture. Zero connection. I could only watch up to the part where all the parents met at the couple's new home. I wanted to stop watching much earlier but I like Jonah Hill and was expecting some actually funny stuff from Eddie Murphy. It's sooo bright and all their clothes are new; it's irritating. Kenya Barris and his Blackish people made sure you feel their presence with soulless everything. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/30/25 Full Review Anthony C Loved it, a little cringe but you gotta find the humor in it!! The cast is awesome Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Norman B It had a few funny moments but it wasn't enough to save the movie from the old white and black narrative Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Alli B I see people writing things like "oppression olympics," but they obviously have zero idea about the commentary the movie presents. The top review says it best: "It's a social commentary and romantic comedy, but the movie can't seem to commit to either..." (paraphrased) A lot of people commented about the insane lack of chemistry between the two main characters, which is fair. I mean, sometimes movies have bad direction and/or bad writing --It's not really the actors posing the problem. There are quite a few cringe moments (but, for the love of God, it's gotten better since the early 2000s where the peak of "black & white people are different 🤯" comedy was like, a stuffy old granny who ends up wearing a sideways cap & rapping by the end of the movie 😆) and I was a bit upset that when his mother was trying really hard (TOO hard) she got super-angry. I get being tired of the perceived microaggressions, or maybe even afraid you're just another prop, but I feel like the anger just perpetuated the whole "angry black woman vs. tiny, frail white woman" thing, rather than sending a message against it. I'm glad it didn't have a s•x scene. Not prudish, I just don't like watching other people bªng 😅 It was a good "popcorn movie." If you have a lazy weekend for once, grab a snack & let your brain rot for a while. One of these days we'll get the interracial love story correct...
