What to Know

Critics Consensus

You People has an outstanding cast and plenty of comedic potential -- both mostly wasted on a picture that dithers between social commentary and romantic comedy without fully committing to either.

Audience Says

A cringe comedy that's mostly just cringe, You People runs in repetitive circles and rarely gives its very funny stars anything deserving of their talents.

It's so funny. I don't know if it'll change race relations, but it'll make you laugh. Go to Full Review

Now, there are enough thoughtful screen examinations of racial politics along with normalized visions of inclusive casting to make "You People" stand out as a gormless throwback. Go to Full Review
Noah Berlatsky Chicago Reader 02/02/2023
The film is much more interested in social embarrassment cringe and gags than it is in any sort of close examination of how racism affects interracial couples. Go to Full Review

A film with several clichés, predictability, and some out-of-place jokes, but which nevertheless allows for an entertaining time with interesting characters and a few gags that work. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Wastes a talented cast on unbelievable characters that are always trying to score political points. A real missed opportunity Go to Full Review

Any yet, there's just something unbearably sanctimonious about this film; a sense of self-righteousness about its racial attitudes that is tone-deaf at best and genuinely, alarmingly hypocritical, at worst. Go to Full Review

Laura 02/05/2023 Lauren London is delightful and funny. Jonah is clever and funny as usual. Eddie is funny as always. I love to see him in roles we are not used to. love the proof matter and the discussion it provokes. appreciated seeing these perspectives on the big screen discussed in a healthy way. See more Daisy L 5d Absolutely loved this movie, was scrolling through netflix, looking for something to watch that was decent enough to watch without much sexual content, harsh, words, violence with a little bit of comedy and romance. I watched it twice in a row, so cute and relatable for me who was in similar situations. I think they did a great job. See more Maria P Nov 23 The worst movie ever. See more Kay B Nov 7 Some people are going to love this movie, and some just won’t, and honestly, a lot of that might come down to the color of their skin and what they’re ready to face. But as a Black woman, I loved it. This film sparks the kind of conversations that need to be had, real, raw, and overdue. It’s a step in the right direction, for sure. That said, I have to be real, Nia Long deserved way more lines. Period. She’s a star in her own right, and limiting her made certain parts of the film feel less authentic. Adding a few Black producers behind the scenes would’ve easily pushed this movie into my top 10. Still, I give credit where it’s due, it made me think, feel, and talk. And that’s what good storytelling should do. Stop hating - lol . Great movie.
