Critics Consensus

It may strike a chord with very young equine enthusiasts, but gorgeous cinematography isn't enough to make up for The Young Black Stallion's uninspired script.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A young girl befriends a young black stallion. This movie serves as a prequel to the 1979 film The Black Stallion, was shot specifically for IMAX theaters and works as a spectacle on a big screen. However, the plot is oversimplified, the acting is wooden at best, and there is very little dialogue between the characters to draw the audience into the movie. There are other movies with little dialogue that work well, but this one doesn't. Skip it! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this movie when it came out. I was a kid and loved anything Black Stallion. Looking back and rewatching it on Disney+, this film is a joke and it's INSULTING that it shares the title with the book The Young Black Stallion, which while not the most amazing of the books in the famed series, is a far cry better than this lazy, cliched "girl and her horse" bullcrap this movie is. The Black Stallion and The Black Stallion Returns seem like they stand alone in the horse genre movies as the movies that don't fall on the "girl and her horse" that has become the norm, and this movie is a victim of that cliche. It's so far removed from the source material is pretty much unrecognizable as the only actual series characters in this crapshoot are The Black and Ishak. Not one other character exists in the books or the previously existing two movies. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review andy h Given it's the first IMAX Shown Disney movie, the scenery and cinematography deserve credit; but it's unfortunately formulaic with its premise of a young girl finding a horse in its 50 minute cutS Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Frances H Beautifully filmed with gorgeous locations and wonderful photography, and a plot written by the Black Stallion's original author, but the girl's bad acting and American accent spoiled the effect. Everyone but the two children have accents, so that the girl and boy don't really stands out. One reviewer liked it better than Hidalgo, but in Hidalgo everything ran true (well, Hidalgo was a true story and very authentically done, with a real plot and very good acting, along with the fact that it was ethnically genuine and harmonious). For example, in Hidalgo, the Arab girl is not allowed to ride in the race because she is a lowly female, a fact that escapes the Disney people.
