Vacuum cleaner salesmen Homer Smith (Jimmy Durante) and Brewster Jones (Phil Silvers) offend technophobic Col. Dobson while trying to sell him a vacuum. Determined to make a sale, Homer pitches to a recruitment officer -- and inadvertently enlists himself and Brewster in the army. The two are attached to Dobson's cavalry unit, where they are assigned to sell Dobson on the value of tanks with the aid of Dobson's daughter, Bliss (Jane Wyman), and her fiancé, Capt. Joe Radcliffe (Regis Toomey).
