What to Know

Critics Consensus

True crime enthusiasts have been satirized more sharply, but engaging leads and a lightly humorous touch make Based on a True Story worth investigating.

Jasper Rees Daily Telegraph (UK) The vapidities of Los Angeles and social media are easier targets but mercilessly hit by a script that’s well served by a cast with reliably funny bones. Rated: 4/5 Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Suspension of disbelief is a highwire act in Based on a True Story, but the show benefits from the couple’s risky, short-sighted instincts and some delicious twists. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 14, 2023 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal It would have required a much more delicate hand than the one piloting this particular barge to navigate the narrow inlet between couples’ comedy and social satire that lies in the path of Based on a True Story. Jun 13, 2023 Full Review Andrew Murray The Upcoming Although Rosenburg’s true crime satire is let down by its clashing tone, its engaging plot is what makes this show an enjoyable watch. Rated: 3/5 Jan 4, 2024 Full Review Chris Wasser Sunday Independent (Ireland) Like Only Murders…, it's about a grisly murder and a band of opportunistic podcasters. Unlike Only Murders…, it tries way too hard to justify its existence. Jan 4, 2024 Full Review Álvaro Onieva Fotogramas While the series has a very similar premise to Selena Gomez's comedy, Based on a True Story manages to find its own tone and personality, and doesn't give a sense of déjà vu. Audience Member Funny, very entertaining, and some fun twists. Very much how there’s a season 3 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/25 Full Review Christopher D I thought season 1 was excellent. The Las Vegas club scene was very funny. The only gripe i have is the ending was a cliffhanger rather than a nice resolution to the story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Kaitlynn H started out good but then the hallucinations/dreams scenes are so annoying. they use the same playbook every episode, sexual hallucinations blah blah blah it gets boring fast Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Dark humor that totally reminds me of Dead To Me on Netflix, but not quite as funny. Still the show is original and that's what Hollywood is missing nowdays. Although for the past few years it seems that Hollywood is obsessed with making movies and shows about serial killer Dads who are good looking and have families with kids. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Serena T Hoping for a season 3 🙏 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Susan J Started out very interestingly. Was hopeful about it. Intrigued. Bemused. It started out funny, nuanced, smart, and satirical. But the comedy became increasingly broad, like artless slapstick, the storylines more outlandish and preposterous, the main characters more moronic each episode, so that they rapidly devolved into unappealing, bumbling, buffoonish cartoon figures who kept creating more problems for themselves and getting themselves deeper into untenable pathetic situations and then squealing how they don't understand how they ended up there. So then you're watching people who are cowardly, dumb, unbelievable and unsympathethic. By the time they started becoming complicit in murder-for-fun I just wanted them to end themselves or be picked up by the cops and locked away and forgotten in prison. The 2 leads (not the serial killer) aren't believable as a couple and the degree of nihilism and misanthropy become tedious. Wish there were no Season 2.
