What to Know

Critics Consensus

Starring Billy Crystal playing against type, Before initially intrigues but doesn't bring enough ideas or variety to sustain what comes after.

Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times "Before" is big on cheap jump scares and creepy imagery. Rated: 2/4 Nov 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Moran Sydney Morning Herald Every comic legend deserves a chance to branch out, the same way Crystal’s buddy Robin Williams famously went dark, often. But Before is no One Hour Photo. It’s barely a blank Polaroid. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter As a vehicle for Crystal to prove that he can be humorlessly somber, Before at least fulfills a very basic mandate. But as a spiritual thriller with supernatural overtones, it’s a lifeless dud... Watch Pachinko instead. Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post Crystal tends to withdraw from what’s going on around him at moments, as if he is sizing everything and everyone up and deciding if he wants to keep interacting with them. In Before, he is completely withdrawn and mostly blank throughout. Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba It’s all painfully predictable. Watching it is equally tedious. Although the episodes are only half an hour long, the pacing and moodiness stretch the runtime interminably. Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Andrew Murray The Upcoming Held together by a commendable performance from Crystal, Before offers viewers an engrossing horror mystery to lose themselves in, even if it takes a little too long to get going. Hank S Look i know it takes a bit to get going but the episodes are only 30min and go by quick. I was in the mood for something like this so maybe that's why my rating is so high but I think you gotta be in the mood for a certain type of movie or your view of it changes That said, I thought Billy, the actor, was great because I didn't see him as a comedian as I watch it. The rest of the cast did a great job a d that kid's eyes will haunt me in my dreams. A bit long to really start rolling but once it does, its a real good suspenseful watch. 7 1/2 out of ten. Ignore those who gave it a 1 or 2. They probably were in the mood for a comedy and this? Well, it sure wouldn't make them laugh. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Diego D The storytelling is so bad structured, and probably the worst part is the acting of the 2 main characters, Jesus! It is so emotionless and at times extremely annoying. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Rich T Should have been called "Boring". Goes nowhere really, really slowly to the point of frustration on the viewers part. Big yawn, avoid at all costs or suffer the same disappointment as it was for me. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review Logan L Not a lot of shows or movies out there that can keep my interests in following it through. I was apprehensive about committing to this show but now it’s got me hooked and waiting til midnight to get the next episode. I think the and movie I’ve seen Rosie Perez in was White men can’t jump. So, it’s great to see her in this and fantastic. Billy Crystal reminds me of my grouchy gramps. lol and I miss Judith light from ugly Betty but seeing her ghostly transformation really creeps me out. That kid actor- his character is really what got me invested because I’m curious what’s going on with him. Is it supernatural or psychological… he had scenes where he really made me feel awful, scared and worried for him . The scenes where he’s almost in a trance and looks like something is hurting him from the inside makes me wince. Or when he sees the worm and he thinks it’s real- or when he’s alone in the hospital room. I hate hospitals. I spent almost 2 weeks in the children’s unit when I was 7 or 8. And I felt so scared. Can only imagine the fear and loneliness his character might be feeling. Before is on my short list of shows I love! Can’t say enough about it! It is a slow burn and most people ( me included) don’t like slow burns but I don’t mind it in this case because I thoroughly enjoy it❤️. My ONLY gripe is that it’s only 30 minutes long. :( Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/24 Full Review B L Awful, don’t waste your time. Goes absolutely nowhere very slowly. I’m embarrassed for anyone associated with it. Oooof! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Gordon E Great concept. Good acting, but story just continues to circle around with no sign of advancement or resolution. Just finished episode 7 How many eerily collected clues will we have to suffer through before the story actually progresses? I’m sure it will have an interesting ending but I can’t waste any more time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
