What to Know

Critics Consensus

Starring Billy Crystal playing against type, Before initially intrigues but doesn't bring enough ideas or variety to sustain what comes after.

Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times "Before" is big on cheap jump scares and creepy imagery. Rated: 2/4 Nov 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Moran Sydney Morning Herald Every comic legend deserves a chance to branch out, the same way Crystal’s buddy Robin Williams famously went dark, often. But Before is no One Hour Photo. It’s barely a blank Polaroid. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter As a vehicle for Crystal to prove that he can be humorlessly somber, Before at least fulfills a very basic mandate. But as a spiritual thriller with supernatural overtones, it’s a lifeless dud... Watch Pachinko instead. Oct 30, 2024 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media The producers of this show try to deliver a moody psychological horror mystery filled with suspense, but only manage to give viewers a dark character-driven story that feels long and repetitive. Apr 2, 2025 Full Review Lindsay Press Culturess Many of this show's problems stem from its refusal to move the story along at a quicker pace earlier in the season. Mar 13, 2025 Full Review Hannah Brown Jerusalem Post Crystal tends to withdraw from what’s going on around him at moments, as if he is sizing everything and everyone up and deciding if he wants to keep interacting with them. In Before, he is completely withdrawn and mostly blank throughout. Nov 15, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Tom F A long slog with zero payoff. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/12/25 Full Review Shane E If considering to start the series - don’t Slow and painful Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review TI H I wanted so much to enjoy Billy Crystal's paranormal mystery about a psychiatrist who discovers that he and his young patient share a common past. This ten-episode show consists of a lot of filler, numerous spooky images of blood and worms and creepy children and a dead wife. None of it adds to the story or makes much sense after the story is over. I kept fast-forwarding through each episode. Perhaps, had Crystal boiled these five hours down to two, he would have produced a decent horror film, but even that’s not certain. I found the whole story rather confusing. I thought I was watching a monster movie, except the solution to the mystery transformed the narrative into psychobabble. I think Billy Crystal, based on his performance, might succeed if he tries a different horror story, produced by someone else. His BEFORE story, however, does not satisfy. /////////// On a side note, what’s with all the one-word titles we’ve been seeing in cinema? BEFORE. FROM. SMILE. At least “Smile” makes sense. “Before” and “From” make it seem as though Hollywood has finally run out of ideas. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Devin M I ended up bingeing the whole thing today so there must have been SOMEthing there, but I couldn't get past the notion that this was a largely failed attempt to bring awareness of what some call "The Larger Reality" to our modern western "scientistic" culture which has for far too long busied itself burning witches and books which embrace paranormal topics we do not AND do not want to understand. So it was with this series, which turned out to be IMHO at best a day late and a dollar short, culture bound, feeble attempt by a myopically self-absorbed and incestuously ill-informed Fox Mulder-esque "I Want To Believe!" newbie to escape his fate as a type-cast lifelong comic while simultaneously vying for a viable role as a whistleblower imbued with 20/20 hindsight, feebly attempting to slam on the brakes of this runaway train Zeitgeist of scientism which continues to bully us all into submissive silence. Sadly, he appears to accomplish neither, while his egoic, self-absorbed myopia screams out; attempting to scold us in most every scene. Thanks, but I'll stick with _When Harry Met Sally_. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Joshua P How the hell did this flop? Billy was absolutely amazing in this and the writing was fantastic. It’s definitely a slow burner but I think people seem to get a little impatient when it comes to some tv shows. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Chris M The writing is just plain bad. Watching Billy try to rescue it is even more painful. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/02/25 Full Review Read all reviews
