Critics Consensus

A darker and more expansive chapter, Criminal Record season 2 trades mystery for moral complexity without losing the tension that made the series stand out.

This kind of gritty specificity is rare for Apple TV – some more would be welcome. Go to Full Review

Criminal Record is not an enormously complex affair. Instead, it offers relatively straightforward and beautifully paced storytelling, its narrative twists emerging like handkerchiefs from a sleeve. The show’s complexity lies in its characters. Go to Full Review

Jumbo makes for an intriguing protagonist (she has just enough foibles to keep her from being a goody-goody) and Capaldi keeps us wondering about where his loyalties lie. Go to Full Review

This sharply written drama is anything but routine. Go to Full Review

Criminal Record‘s second season is every bit as gritty and enthralling as its first. Despite a momentary lull in the pacing, Capaldi and Jumbo lead the charge in this exhilarating crime thriller. Go to Full Review

As much as we like Jumbo and Capaldi, there’s nothing about Criminal Record‘s second season that holds our interest. Go to Full Review

Eric N @EricNix Jul 28 I actually preferred Season 2 of CR to the first one. There was some excellent character development and it was great to see the bonding intensify between the two leads, who are both excellent. This season's new featured characters, Dustin Demri-Burns (Cosmo) and Luther Ford (Billy) are fantastic. They're a pair of lost sheep, both trying to figure out their place in the world. For those reviewers who claim that Criminal Record is too "woke" or that white supremacists don't exist or are perfectly harmless, feel free to watch another series that's more to your liking. I'm content with Criminal Record, an intense, thought-provoking drama that's well-shot, well-written and well-acted. I especially like how the series demonstrates that it's sometimes necessary to cross a few moral lines to get the job done. As Peter Capaldi says at one point, "Truth has no currency" with some people in today's world. When dealing with that reality, there's no choice but to fight fire with fire. See more Lauri S @Picksy67 Jun 13 I like it better than s1. See more Richard B @RT06263729 Jun 13 The acting is fantastic this season. They took the show to a new level and had some interesting family themes and struggles. I really enjoy Criminal Record, they have created a dark and mysterious side to police and intelligence. Billy is an insane actor and so was the lead bad guy who also was in Slow Horses. This was a brilliant season and I felt it was actually better than S1 which is rare. See more Drew M. @Stonehands211 Jun 10 Not as good as S1 but still a solid season of television. Was surprised with the series pathos and growth between our two protagonists. I hope we get to continue this partnership and watch them work together more in the future 🤞 See more Jane L @Mojan May 31 Although this is a good tv series by comparison with others of this type, it is drifting towards cliche in many respects. Only halfway through the fourth episode but it’s really "whack the viewer over the head stuff" with character portrayal and, of course, the obligatory relationship drama between DS June Lenker and John Paul Brownlee is a bit weary. See more Robbi W @Fangarang May 28 If you love having ungrounded woke pushed down your throat where all white men = bad then this is the show for you. Not one white male character is saved from this blatant racism. It’s sad because season 1 was great. Season 2 is offensive and I’m not even a white male. See more Read all reviews
