Caroline Framke Boston Globe While there’s no doubt in my mind that Bates would’ve done a fine job playing a straight-up Matlock, it’s been far more fun to watch her hone an entirely new character on her own intriguing journey Apr 18, 2025 Full Review Scott Bryan BBC.com It’s neat, it’s predictable, it’s not going to change the world but is actually better than some American legal shows I’ve seen. Rated: Must Watch Jan 8, 2025 Full Review Keith Watson Daily Telegraph (UK) This is nostalgia-hued TV that’s not trying to be gritty, right down to a nod to the old Columbo trick, revived in Natasha Lyonne’s Poker Face, of replaying how Matty put the clues together with a reprise. Rated: 4/5 Dec 6, 2024 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) There’s a thrill of jeopardy every time Matty seems about to be exposed as a fake. Rated: 4/5 Aug 4, 2025 Full Review Ana Dumaraog Screen Rant Despite a thin case to close out Matlock season 1, the show has long proven that it can come up with interesting weekly cases and seamlessly incorporate it into its bigger plotlines. Rated: 9/10 Apr 18, 2025 Full Review Lindsay Press Culturess Matlock, in several ways, is an ideal portrayal of what a reboot can and should be. Mar 13, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Titus A I will watch anything with the ever eternal and amazing Kathy Bates. I am pleasantly surprised at how much I got into this show and like it and all its characters. I am excited for the 2nd season to start. It is the only television series I watch every show, and has been since The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019. Most television and most movies are boring lame garbage but I really enjoy the new Matlock. And I never even watched the original that this show is based on only due to the name. But I did love Andy Griffith as much as I love Kathy Bates. Again, I love all the characters and actors on this show, but Kathy Bates is who keeps me coming back. The writing is good. But again, for me, Kathy Bates is why even bothered to give it a shot. And so glad I did. I highly recommend it to anyone with taste and an appreciation for great actresses and a series lead by one of the best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Sam R I don’t know where the rating came from. Average show trying to emulate Matlock original version 👎 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Julian B How on earth can this be rated so highly, signs of big studio manipulation. Stereotypical drama, everything just falls into place, perfect smiles everywhere and overacting abounds. RT reviews used to be the go to source, but when this twaddle gets such high ratings, I despair. Just google RT score manipulation. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review Ken K I can't believe I wasted my time with this. What started out as a quirky, original twist on a legal drama ended as an insufferable, manipulative bore. There is slow burn and there is a no burn fizzle out. I watched this because of the perfect critic score. 100% goes to shows like ER, Sopranos, The Wire, not badly written tripe. After the initial spark it occasionally combusts but rarely, and ends with a thud. The weekly cases are terrible and there is so much ham thrown around at the end they could open a deli. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Tom F Satisfying the requirements of a CBS episodic legal procedural while having some fun with breaking the form and letting the characters interact in interesting ways. Far from perfect, but at least it takes some chances. Leah Lewis steals every scene she is in. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/16/25 Full Review Jay W The series works better as an episodic court room drama. The self-contained legal cases that the team takes on are entertaining. But the series falls short is in the larger overarching storyline. Matty Matlock is trying to prove that the law firm deliberately hid evidence that could have taken opioids off the market which led to her daughter's death. She figures the best way to do that is to legally change her name, change her accent and enter undercover as an old lawyer. This inevitably leads to some tired and cliched story telling beats. Kathy Bates acts well, but the contrived story drags the series down. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
