What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shrinking has darker ideas on its mind than its earnest approach can often translate, but Jason Segel and Harrison Ford's sparkling turns make these characters worth close analysis.

Tara Judah Sight & Sound While broad stereotyping worked beautifully for Brett Goldstein as the uber-angry footballer Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, Segel’s over-egging here comes across as insincere. Feb 12, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au For a story fuelled by grief, Shrinking expertly balances a hard-to-hit tone. It can be melancholic and hopeful, gloomy and absurd. Feb 6, 2023 Full Review Alison Herman The Ringer The latest Apple TV+ series with a focus on therapy comes from some of the people behind Ted Lasso, but without the same success. Feb 4, 2023 Full Review Samantha Schuster Cinéfilo Serial It's one of those lovely series that lifts your spirits in difficult times, not because it doesn't touch on serious and important topics, but quite the opposite: it does so, but from a pleasant and fun perspective. That message envelopes Shrinking–a cozy comedy drama with a strong empathetic core. Grant C. Shrinking is one of those shows that surprises you with how much heart it has. It balances comedy and emotion really well without feeling cheesy. Jason Segel plays a therapist who starts being brutally honest with his clients, and somehow it actually works. Harrison Ford is a highlight. He’s grumpy, funny, and totally nails the role. The whole cast works great together, and the writing feels natural and sharp. If you liked Ted Lasso, this gives off a similar feel. It’s not about big twists, just good people dealing with life in a messy but honest way. Bottom line: It’s funny, thoughtful, and easy to binge. Definitely worth watching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review peter s Joy and Pain. realism, a nuanced drama + comedy, this was a pleasure to watch, i laughed so hard and cried sometimes. loss and grief vs. subtle smutty talk & exceptional frankly open characters, what a choice ! ! thank you, all actors, sideactors and extras, of course well done by staff writers, a fine drafted plot and nuanced & funny overacting, where it fits, at the right moment. also well done by directors and producers - keep on! i am grateful and watched a second time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Mike J This series is special. Segal, Williams, and the legendary Harrison Ford are next level. This may be my favorite show since "Schitt's Creek" which swept the Emmys a few years ago. This show is special. Every episode is a dream. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Sean M. This show is great. It has humor, an easy digestible plot, and characters you grow to care about. Jason Segal is normally the standout, but the entire cast brings something to the table here. Watch if you want an easy show to watch, that is still able to capture your full attention and make you want to continue. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Cory C Best TV since Ted Lasso, Harrison Ford and Jason Siegal are standouts. Every character gets their time in the spotlight and it is never wasted. A father struggling with the aftermath of losing his wife makes for a deeply moving and compelling story with amazing comedy throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
