Critics Consensus

The Testaments ably continues The Handmaid's Tale's fight through a coming-of-age lens in a slow-burning world builder that features an excellent cast of fresh talent.

A lesser show might have taken a sneering approach, casting judgment on Gilead’s aristocratic wives for the Faustian bargain they’ve made. Instead, it evokes empathy, and in doing so lands a more nuanced point. Go to Full Review

While newcomers can certainly find things to enjoy in The Testaments’ strong central performances and painterly cinematography, it’s hard to shake the sense that it’s only prolonging a story that should’ve wrapped up ages ago. Go to Full Review

The show’s setting may feel YA, but the reality it seeks to depict is anything but. Go to Full Review

Setting 'The Testaments' at what is essentially a high school results in a compelling blend of teen drama and harrowing dystopian thriller — it's sort of 'Mean Girls of the Brutal Theocracy.' Go to Full Review

Whilst the predecessor was often sensational, it was often a punish and too confronting for some. This feels like it has learned from experience how to strike a balance between the dystopian horrors and the requirement to keep viewers coming back. Go to Full Review

“The Testaments” is a powerful television adaptation of a literary masterpiece, but it is not an easy watch. Go to Full Review

Andrew J @RT46071695 Sep 5, 2026 Wasn’t sure if this would be a slow spinoff from The Handmaids Tale, I expected the story line to be far weaker, I mean… what could have topped The Handmaids Tale. Well, I was absolutely blown out of the water, absolutely engaging, if you pay attention to the small details throughout you can grasp the direction of which things are going. It absolutely is an exceptional continuation of another chapter, I will be absolutely glued to season 2. Honestly it’s an absolutely phenomenal series! Just… wow! See more Lenore D @RT5679902198744 Aug 26, 2026 Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Was impressed by Lucy Halliday who plays Daisy, did a quick check, a born and bred Paisley girl which came as a very pleasant surprise. See more Cherry D @RT56789032190153 Aug 26, 2026 The whole series was an engaging watch, especially the last couple of episodes. Looking forward to S2 already. See more Hio22 T @RT03636226 Aug 25, 2026 Overall, an enjoyable and engaging watch. My main criticisms are some clunky scene transitions, shallow dialogue/narration, and, most importantly, the completely flat father-daughter relationship between Agnes and Commander Mackenzie. Mackenzie is barely given any screen time, which feels like a huge missed opportunity. A more developed relationship could have explored the tension between Gilead's commanders as war criminals and their roles as fathers. Instead, Mackenzie feels more like a box to tick than a fully developed character, with a rather flat performance that makes him come across as pathetic rather than deliberately complex. See more S A @Moviepopcornjoy Aug 19, 2026 Well told story. Different from the book in areas. I enjoyed the first season. See more Nadine S @Nadine164 Aug 19, 2026 I went in expecting it to feel like a weaker version of The Handmaid's Tale, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's darker in some places but actually much easier to watch, and I really liked the pacing. It still has some connections to the original show, but it feels like its own story.
